Using Quantifiers (অনেক - onek, কিছু - kichu)

Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

Use `onek` for 'many/much' and `kichu` for 'some/a few' before any noun, regardless of whether it's countable or uncountable.

  • Use `onek` (অনেক) for large quantities: `onek boi` (many books).
  • Use `kichu` (কিছু) for small/unspecified quantities: `kichu jol` (some water).

Meanings

Quantifiers in Bengali are words used to express the volume or number of a noun. Unlike English, Bengali does not use different words for countable (many/few) and uncountable (much/little) nouns in basic contexts.

1

Large Quantity (Countable/Uncountable)

Using `onek` to indicate a large number of items or a large amount of a substance.

“সেখানে অনেক মানুষ ছিল (There were many people there)”

“আমি অনেক চা পান করি (I drink a lot of tea)”

2

Small/Indefinite Quantity

Using `kichu` to indicate 'some' or 'a few' of something.

“আমাকে কিছু খাবার দাও (Give me some food)”

“আমার কিছু প্রশ্ন আছে (I have some questions)”

3

Degree/Intensity

Using `onek` as an adverb to mean 'very' or 'much more'.

“এই খাবারটা অনেক ভালো (This food is very good)”

“সে আমার থেকে অনেক বড় (He is much older than me)”

4

Approximate Quantity with Suffixes

Adding `-ta` to create `onekta` (mostly/a lot of it) or `kichuta` (somewhat/a bit).

“কাজটা অনেকটা শেষ (The work is mostly finished)”

“আমি কিছুটা ক্লান্ত (I am somewhat tired)”
