Grammar to Know
When referring to an object sinking, use the active voice. The object is the subject of the sentence.
کشتی غرق شد. (The ship sank.)
When referring to a person or animal drowning, use the active voice. The person/animal is the subject of the sentence.
مرد در رودخانه غرق شد. (The man drowned in the river.)
To express that something was 'sunk' or 'drowned' by an external force, you can use the causative form with 'کردن' (kardan) - to do/make.
طوفان کشتی را غرق کرد. (The storm sank the ship.)
To say something is 'immersed' or 'engulfed' in something (often metaphorically), 'غرق شدن' can be followed by 'در' (dar) - in/into.
او در کارش غرق شد. (He became engrossed in his work.)
For continuous or habitual action, use the imperfect tense.
کشتیها اغلب در این منطقه غرق میشوند. (Ships often sink in this area.)
