Structuring Arguments and Debates

Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

Mastering C2 argumentation in Croatian requires using sophisticated discourse markers like `štoviše` and `nadasve` to create logical, persuasive flow.

  • Use `premda` or `unatoč` for concessions to show nuance (e.g., 'Premda je skupo, nužno je').
  • Employ `nadalje` or `povrh toga` to stack arguments logically instead of just using 'i'.
  • Signal conclusions with `slijedom navedenog` or `shodno tome` for maximum formal impact.

Easily Confused

Structuring Arguments and Debates vs Dapače vs. Štoviše

Learners often use 'dapače' to mean 'moreover', but 'dapače' is primarily for correcting or intensifying a previous statement, often after a negative.

Structuring Arguments and Debates vs Unatoč vs. Usprkos

They both mean 'despite', but 'unatoč' is slightly more common for abstract obstacles, while 'usprkos' is for active opposition.

Common Mistakes

Ja mislim da on je dobar.

Mislim da je on dobar.

Redundant use of 'ja' and wrong word order.

On je visok i on je jak.

On je visok i jak.

Repeating the subject is unnecessary in Croatian.

Iako je padala kiša, ali smo išli van.

Iako je padala kiša, išli smo van.

Using both 'iako' and 'ali' in the same sentence is redundant.

On je pametan, dapače on je lijen.

On je pametan, ali je lijen.

Using 'dapače' for a simple contrast instead of 'ali'.

Unatoč kiše, izašli smo.

Unatoč kiši, izašli smo.

'Unatoč' requires the Dative case, not Genitive.

Štoviše, on nije došao.

Štoviše, on nije ni nazvao.

'Štoviše' should add something stronger, not just a negative fact.

Twitter Debate common

Legal Document constant

🎯

The 'Ali' Diet

Try to write a whole page without using the word 'ali'. Use 'međutim', 'pak', 'no', or 'doduše' instead. It instantly boosts your perceived level.
⚠️

Dapače Danger

Never use 'dapače' if you aren't 100% sure it's adding a 'stronger' or 'contrary' point. If in doubt, use 'štoviše'.
💬

Polite Disagreement

In Croatia, starting with 'Doduše...' (Admittedly) before disagreeing makes you sound like an intellectual rather than an aggressor.
💡

Enclitic Check

Always remember that words like 'je', 'li', 'su' cannot follow a comma directly after a marker. 'Međutim, on je...' is correct.

Smart Tips

Replace 'jer' with 'budući da' and move it to the beginning of the sentence.

Kasnim jer je gužva. Budući da je gužva, kasnim.

Never use 'ali' (but) in the second half of the sentence. It's a double-connector error.

Iako je sunce, ali je hladno. Iako je sunce, hladno je.

Use 'pak' after the subject instead of 'ali' at the start.

Ja volim more, ali on voli planine. Ja volim more, on pak voli planine.

Use 'Slijedom navedenog' instead of 'Na kraju'.

Na kraju, hvala vam. Slijedom navedenog, zahvaljujem na pažnji.

Pronunciation

Međutim, ON je došao. (Not: Međutim, je on došao.)

Enclitics after markers

When starting a sentence with 'Međutim' or 'Štoviše', the enclitic (like 'je' or 'su') must follow the first stressed word of the main clause.

Rhetorical Pause

Nadalje, [pauza] moramo razmotriti...

A short pause after a discourse marker emphasizes the importance of the following point.

Memorize It

Mnemonic

Remember 'Š-N-S': Štoviše (Add), Nadalje (Next), Stoga (So). The 'SNS' of logic.

Visual Association

Imagine a stone bridge. Each 'discourse marker' is a heavy stone that connects two sides of a river. Without them, your thoughts are just isolated islands.

Rhyme

Kad argumente slažeš ti, 'štoviše' i 'stoga' koristi!

Story

A lawyer stands in court. He starts with 'Prvenstveno' to grab attention, uses 'Doduše' to admit a small fault, then drops 'Štoviše' to reveal a smoking gun, and ends with 'Shodno tome' to win the case.

Challenge

Write a 5-sentence paragraph about climate change using at least 4 of the following: premda, nadalje, štoviše, shodno tome.

Cultural Notes

In formal debates, using 'pak' (whereas/on the other hand) is a sign of high education and stylistic elegance.

In informal arguments, 'ma' is used as a powerful discourse marker to dismiss an opponent's point.

Avoid 'ja mislim' in papers; use impersonal forms like 'može se zaključiti' (it can be concluded).

Many Croatian discourse markers come from Old Church Slavonic roots (e.g., 'stoga' from 's' + 'toga').

Conversation Starters

Što mislite o uvođenju četverodnevnog radnog tjedna?

Je li umjetna inteligencija prijetnja ili prilika?

Argumentirajte zašto je vaš rodni grad najbolji za život.

Journal Prompts

FAQ (8)

In formal writing, it is better to use `Međutim` or `No`. In fiction or informal speech, starting with `Ali` is acceptable for emphasis.

Both mean 'although', but `premda` is more formal and literary. Use `iako` in everyday conversation.

Not always. It can also mean 'even more so' or 'moreover' in an intensifying sense, but it always carries more rhetorical weight than `štoviše`.

`Jer` cannot start a sentence in standard Croatian. `Budući da` is the correct way to begin a sentence with a reason.

You can use `S druge strane` or the shorter, more elegant `pak` placed after the subject (e.g., 'On pak...').

Yes, they are virtually identical in meaning and both require the Dative case.

It means 'after all' or 'besides'. It is used to add a final, often decisive, argument.

Use it in official, legal, or very formal business contexts to mean 'accordingly' or 'consequently'.
