Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

Causative verbs in Indonesian use the suffix '-kan' to turn an action into something you make someone or something do.

  • Add '-kan' to a base verb to make it transitive: 'duduk' (sit) -> 'mendudukkan' (to seat someone).
  • Use 'memper-kan' for more complex causative meanings: 'memperbaiki' (to make better/repair).
  • The subject is the agent causing the action, not the one performing the base action directly.
Subject + me- + Base Verb + -kan + Object

Meanings

The causative form indicates that the subject is causing an action to happen to an object, or causing an object to undergo a state change.

💡

Check the root

Always identify the root verb first. If it's 'jatuh', the causative is 'menjatuhkan'.
⚠️

Don't over-suffix

Don't add '-kan' to verbs that are already transitive or don't take it.
🎯

Nasalization matters

Practice the 'me-', 'men-', 'mem-' rules. They are the key to sounding native.
💬

Casual speech

In casual speech, people often drop the 'me-' prefix. Don't be surprised if you hear 'jatuhin' instead of 'menjatuhkan'.

Smart Tips

Use the causative form instead of adding 'membuat'.

Saya membuat dia duduk. Saya mendudukkan dia.

Add '-kan' to the adjective.

Saya membuat air panas. Saya memanaskan air.

Always use the full 'me-' prefix.

Saya benerin mobil. Saya memperbaiki mobil.

Ask: am I moving the object? If yes, use -kan.

Saya memukuli meja. Saya memukulkan meja.

Pronunciation

me- + p -> mem- (memukul)

Nasalization

The 'me-' prefix changes based on the first letter of the root.

Statement

Saya menjatuhkan buku ↘

Neutral declaration of action.

Question

Apakah kamu menjatuhkan buku? ↗

Seeking confirmation.

Memorize It

Cultural Notes

In informal Jakarta Indonesian, the 'me-' prefix is often dropped entirely.

Formal contexts strictly require the 'me-' prefix and '-kan' suffix.

The suffix '-kan' evolved from the preposition 'akan' (to/for).
