Subjective Case with Transitive Verbs

Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

When you use a transitive verb in the past tense, the subject must take the 'le' particle.

  • Use 'le' with subjects of transitive verbs in past tenses: 'Ram-le bhat khayo' (Ram ate rice).
  • Do not use 'le' with intransitive verbs: 'Ram gayo' (Ram went).
  • The verb agrees with the object, not the subject: 'Ram-le keti dekhyo' (Ram saw the girl).
Subject + ले (le) + Object + Verb (Past Tense)

Meanings

The 'le' particle marks the agent (subject) of a transitive verb when the action is in the perfective (past) aspect.

1

Agentive Marker

“रामले काम गर्यो”

“सीताले गीत गाइन्”
