§ Basic Usage
The most straightforward way to use 数目 is to state the number or amount of something. You can put it directly after a quantifier or adjective that describes the number.
学生的数目很大。
Here, 学生的数目 (xuésheng de shùmù) means 'the number of students'. 很大 (hěn dà) means 'very large'. So, 'The number of students is very large.'
这笔钱的数目不小。
Here, 这笔钱的数目 (zhè bǐ qián de shùmù) is 'the amount of this money'. 不小 (bù xiǎo) means 'not small', implying it's a considerable amount. So, 'The amount of this money is not small.'
§ With Prepositions and Comparisons
You can also use 数目 with prepositions like 对于 (duìyú - regarding, concerning) to introduce the topic of a number, or in comparisons using 比 (bǐ - compare to).
对于参与者的数目,我们很满意。
Here, 对于参与者的数目 (duìyú cānyùzhě de shùmù) means 'regarding the number of participants'. 我们很满意 (wǒmen hěn mǎnyì) means 'we are very satisfied'. So, 'Regarding the number of participants, we are very satisfied.'

How to Use It
数目 (shùmù) refers to a quantity, often a total or a count. It's generally used for countable things or abstract quantities. Think of it as 'the number of X' or 'the amount of Y.' For example, when you talk about the 'number of students' or the 'amount of money.' It's pretty straightforward.
A common mistake is confusing 数目 (shùmù) with other words like 数字 (shùzì) or 数量 (shùliàng).
数字 (shùzì) specifically refers to the digits or numerals themselves (like '1', '2', '3'). You wouldn't say 'the digits of students' you'd say 'the number of students.'
数量 (shùliàng) is more general and can refer to both countable and uncountable things, often implying a larger or more substantial quantity. While sometimes interchangeable with 数目 (shùmù), 数目 often emphasizes the specific count or total.
Just remember: 数目 for the 'number/amount' in a general sense, 数字 for the actual 'digits', and 数量 for a more broad 'quantity'.
Tips
Basic Meaning
数目 (shùmù) is a noun that means number or amount. Think of it as a general term for a quantity of things.
Common Usage
You'll often hear 数目 when talking about statistics, financial figures, or the quantity of items. It's quite versatile.
Distinction from 数量 (shùliàng)

Synonym: 数字 (shùzì)
数字 (shùzì) specifically refers to a digit or a numeral. While related, 数目 is the broader concept of a number or amount.
Practice asking 'how many'
Try to use 数目 in questions like '有多少数目?' (Yǒu duōshǎo shùmù?) - How many numbers/amounts are there?
Focus on context
The best way to understand 数目 is to see it in different contexts. Pay attention to how native speakers use it, especially in reports or news.
