Hoe laat vertrekt de trein?

What time does the train leave?

Significado

Asking for departure time.

🌍

Contexto cultural

The Dutch take train times very seriously. If a train is scheduled for 12:01, it will often close its doors at 12:00 and 45 seconds. Always arrive at the platform at least 3 minutes before the 'vertrektijd'. The national railway company is NS. Their yellow and blue trains are iconic. You will see 'Vertrektijden' (departure times) on large blue screens throughout every station. Before asking 'Hoe laat vertrekt de trein?', make sure you have 'ingecheckt' (checked in) with your card or phone. You cannot buy tickets on the train itself. Dutch stations use 'Spoor' for tracks. Sometimes a track is split into 'a' and 'b' (e.g., Spoor 4a). Make sure you ask which part of the track the train departs from.

💡

Use the NS App

Instead of asking, most Dutch people use the NS app. However, asking is a great way to practice your Dutch!

⚠️

Don't say 'Wat tijd'

This is the most common mistake for English speakers. Always use 'Hoe laat'.
