Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

Use the definite article to talk about a whole category, species, or abstract concept as a single entity.

  • Use singular definite for species: 'Лъвът е хищник' (The lion is a predator).
  • Use definite for abstract concepts: 'Любовта е сляпа' (Love is blind).
  • Apply the full article (-ът/-ят) for masculine subjects in formal writing.
  • Generic plural also takes the article: 'Книгите са прозорец към света' (Books are a window to the world).
