At the A1 level, '상호의존적' is a very difficult word because it is an academic term. Beginners usually learn the word '서로' (each other) and '도와요' (help). You don't need to use this word yet, but it's good to know that '상호' means 'each other' and '의존' means 'relying on someone'. Imagine two friends sharing food; they help each other. In advanced Korean, we call this 'mutually dependent'. For now, focus on the simple parts like '서로' and '의존'.
At the A2 level, you might see '상호의존적' in simple articles or intermediate textbooks. You already know '의존하다' (to depend). Adding '상호' (mutual) makes it 'mutual dependence'. You can use this word when talking about how nature works or how family members help each other. Instead of just saying '우리는 서로 필요해요' (We need each other), you can say '우리는 상호의존적인 관계예요' to sound more formal. It is a great word to use when you want to describe a relationship that is not one-sided.
At the B1 level, you should start using '상호의존적' in your writing tasks, especially for the TOPIK exam. You can use it to describe social issues, like how the city and the countryside need each other. Understand that the suffix '-적' turns nouns into adjectives. You should be comfortable with the pattern 'A와 B는 상호의존적이다'. This level requires you to move beyond simple verbs and start using these 'Hanja' (Chinese character) based adjectives to express complex ideas about society and teamwork.
At the B2 level, '상호의존적' should be a regular part of your vocabulary. You should recognize it in news broadcasts about international trade or environmental protection. You can use it to explain the 'Interdependence of the Global Economy' (세계 경제의 상호의존성). At this level, you should also learn the adverbial form '상호의존적으로' and the noun form '상호의존성'. You are expected to understand the nuance that this word implies a system where if one part fails, the other is at risk. It is a key word for discussing systemic thinking.
At the C1 level, you should use '상호의존적' with precision, distinguishing it from related terms like '상호보완적' (complementary) or '유기적' (organic). You can use it in academic debates or professional business strategies. You should be able to discuss the 'negative' aspects of interdependence, such as how it can lead to a lack of autonomy or systemic vulnerability. Your usage should feel natural in complex sentence structures, such as '현대 사회의 상호의존적 구조 내에서 개인의 독립성을 유지하는 것은 도전적인 과제입니다' (Maintaining individual independence within the mutually dependent structure of modern society is a challenging task).
At the C2 level, you have a masterly grasp of '상호의존적'. You can use it to discuss abstract philosophical concepts, such as the Buddhist concept of 'dependent origination' or complex geopolitical theories. You can use the word in literary or highly formal contexts, playing with its connotations of both strength and fragility. You understand the historical evolution of the term and how it applies to digital ecosystems and artificial intelligence. You can use it to critique social structures, arguing whether a certain system is truly '상호의존적' or if it is merely a disguised form of exploitation.

상호의존적 في 30 ثانية

  • 상호의존적 describes a relationship where two or more parties rely on each other for survival or success.
  • It is a formal adjective commonly used in economics, ecology, and international relations to show interconnectedness.
  • The word is composed of 'Sangho' (mutual) and 'Uijon' (dependence), emphasizing a two-way street of reliance.
  • It differs from simple dependence by requiring that all parties involved are equally or reciprocally linked.

The Korean word 상호의존적 (Sangho-uijon-jeok) is a sophisticated adjective that describes a state where two or more entities are inextricably linked, relying on one another for survival, functionality, or success. In a globalized world, this word has become increasingly common in news reports, academic papers, and deep interpersonal discussions. It is composed of three distinct parts: Sangho (mutual/reciprocal), Uijon (dependence/reliance), and the suffix Jeok which transforms the noun into an adjective. When you use this word, you are implying that the relationship is not one-sided; it is a two-way street where the actions of one party significantly impact the other.

Ecology and Nature
In biology, '상호의존적' describes symbiotic relationships. For instance, bees and flowers exist in a state where the bee needs nectar for food and the flower needs the bee for pollination. Without one, the other struggles to survive.

자연계의 모든 생물은 상호의존적인 관계를 맺고 있습니다. (All living things in nature have a mutually dependent relationship.)

Beyond nature, the term is frequently applied to economics and international relations. No country is an island in the modern economy; trade makes nations '상호의존적'. If one country's economy crashes, it creates a ripple effect across its trading partners. This nuance is crucial because it highlights vulnerability and strength simultaneously. It suggests that while we are stronger together, we are also more susceptible to the failures of others.

Psychology and Relationships
In a healthy marriage or partnership, '상호의존적' is often seen as a positive middle ground between being overly '의존적' (dependent/clingy) and '독립적' (independent/isolated). It represents a collaborative bond where both individuals support each other's growth.

현대 사회에서 개인과 사회는 매우 상호의존적입니다. (In modern society, individuals and society are very mutually dependent.)

Finally, the term is used in technology and engineering. Complex software systems often have components that are '상호의존적'. If one module fails, the entire system might halt because they rely on each other's data output. Understanding this word helps you navigate high-level discussions in Korean about how the world is interconnected.

Business Context
Companies and their suppliers are '상호의존적'. The supplier needs the company for revenue, and the company needs the supplier for parts to create products.

Using 상호의존적 correctly requires understanding its grammatical placement. As an adjective ending in '-적', it can be used in two primary ways: as an attributive adjective (modifying a noun) or as a predicative adjective (using the copula '이다'). When modifying a noun, it almost always takes the form '상호의존적인'. When ending a sentence, it becomes '상호의존적이다'.

우리는 상호의존적인 경제 체제 속에 살고 있습니다. (We are living in a mutually dependent economic system.)

Notice how '상호의존적인' directly precedes '경제 체제' (economic system). This is the most common usage in formal writing and news reporting. If you want to state that a relationship is mutually dependent, you would use the '이다' form. For example, '국가 간의 관계는 매우 상호의존적입니다' (The relationship between nations is very mutually dependent).

Common Noun Pairings
상호의존적인 관계 (Mutually dependent relationship)
상호의존적인 구조 (Mutually dependent structure)
상호의존적인 성격 (Mutually dependent nature/character)

In more advanced contexts, you might see the adverbial form '상호의존적으로', which means 'mutually dependently'. This is used to describe how an action is performed. '두 부서는 상호의존적으로 업무를 수행합니다' (The two departments perform their work in a mutually dependent manner). This implies that their workflows are intertwined and they must coordinate closely to succeed.

기술과 과학은 상호의존적으로 발전해 왔습니다. (Technology and science have developed in a mutually dependent way.)

Formal vs. Informal
Formal: 국제 사회는 상호의존적 관계에 기반합니다. (International society is based on mutually dependent relationships.)
Informal: 우리 사이는 너무 상호의존적인 것 같아. (I think our relationship is too mutually dependent/codependent.)

To emphasize the intensity of the dependence, you can add adverbs like '매우' (very), '밀접하게' (closely), or '절대적으로' (absolutely). For example, '생태계는 절대적으로 상호의존적인 네트워크입니다' (The ecosystem is an absolutely mutually dependent network). This highlights the fragility and necessity of the connection.

You are most likely to encounter 상호의존적 in contexts that involve complex systems. If you watch a Korean news segment about global supply chains, you will hear the anchor discuss how '상호의존적인 글로벌 경제' (the mutually dependent global economy) is being affected by local events. It is a staple of '시사' (current affairs) and '경제' (economics) reporting.

뉴스 리포트: '반도체 공급망의 상호의존적 특성 때문에 한 국가의 생산 차질이 전 세계로 번지고 있습니다.'

Academic environments are another primary location for this word. In a university lecture on sociology, political science, or environmental studies, professors will use '상호의존적' to explain theories like '상호의존론' (Interdependence Theory). It is used to describe how social groups, nations, or species cannot be understood in isolation but only through their relationships with others.

Documentaries
Nature documentaries often use this word to describe the delicate balance of an ecosystem. You'll hear phrases like '숲의 생물들은 상호의존적 생태계를 이룹니다' (The creatures of the forest form a mutually dependent ecosystem).

In business meetings, specifically those involving strategy and partnerships, you'll hear '상호의존적' used to define the nature of a collaboration. A CEO might say, '우리 회사의 성공은 파트너사들과의 상호의존적 협력에 달려 있습니다' (Our company's success depends on mutually dependent cooperation with our partners). This frames the partnership as vital and non-optional.

비즈니스 회의: '우리는 서로 상호의존적인 이익을 추구해야 합니다.' (We must pursue mutually dependent benefits.)

Lastly, you might hear it in philosophical or self-help contexts. Speakers discussing the 'Interconnectedness of Life' often use '상호의존적' to describe the human condition. They argue that humans are social animals who are naturally '상호의존적', and that acknowledging this leads to a more compassionate society.

One of the most frequent mistakes learners make with 상호의존적 is confusing it with simple '의존적' (dependent). While '의존적' implies a one-way reliance (A depends on B), '상호의존적' specifically requires the reliance to be mutual (A depends on B, and B depends on A). Using '상호의존적' when the relationship is parasitic or one-sided is factually incorrect.

Mistake: 아이는 부모에게 상호의존적입니다. (Incorrect if the child only receives.)
Correction: 아이는 부모에게 의존적입니다. (The child is dependent on the parents.)

Another mistake involves the incorrect use of the particle '에'. Because '의존' (dependence) usually takes the particle '에' (dependent on...), learners often try to say 'A는 B에 상호의존적이다'. While understandable, it is more natural to say 'A와 B는 상호의존적이다' (A and B are mutually dependent) or 'A와 B는 상호의존적인 관계이다'. The 'mutual' aspect usually groups the subjects together using '와/과' (and).

Adjective vs. Noun
Mistake: 그들은 상호의존을 관계를 맺고 있다. (Grammatically broken)
Correction: 그들은 상호의존적인 관계를 맺고 있다. (They have a mutually dependent relationship.)

Learners also sometimes confuse '상호의존적' with '상호보완적' (complementary). While they are related, '상호보완적' means that two things complete each other by providing what the other lacks. '상호의존적' means they need each other to exist or function. A lock and a key are '상호보완적', but the economy and the environment are '상호의존적'.

비교: '상호보완적' (Complementary) vs '상호의존적' (Mutually Dependent)

Finally, be careful with the spelling. Learners sometimes write '상호의존정' or '상호외존적'. Remember: (Ui) as in '의사' (doctor) and (Jon) as in '존재' (existence). The word literally means 'mutual reliance existence quality'.

To broaden your vocabulary, it's helpful to look at words that share the same 'neighborhood' as 상호의존적. Depending on the context, you might want to switch to a word that emphasizes a slightly different aspect of the connection.

상호보완적 (Complementary)
This word emphasizes how two things fit together perfectly. If A has what B lacks, and B has what A lacks, they are '상호보완적'. Example: '남편과 아내는 상호보완적인 성격이다' (The husband and wife have complementary personalities).

Another strong alternative is 공생적 (Symbiotic). This is borrowed directly from biology but is used metaphorically in business and social sciences. It implies living together in a way that benefits both. '대기업과 중소기업의 공생적 관계' (A symbiotic relationship between large corporations and small-to-medium enterprises).

유기적 (Organic/Interconnected): '모든 부서가 유기적으로 연결되어 있습니다.' (All departments are organically connected.)

유기적 (Organic) is often used when describing a system where all parts work together like organs in a body. While '상호의존적' focuses on the reliance, '유기적' focuses on the seamless integration and smooth coordination of the parts.

Comparison Table
  • 상호의존적: Focus on mutual need and survival.
  • 상호보완적: Focus on filling each other's gaps.
  • 공생적: Focus on mutual benefit and living together.
  • 유기적: Focus on integrated, systematic coordination.

Lastly, 밀접한 (Close/Intimate) is a simpler adjective often used in phrases like '밀접한 관련이 있다' (to be closely related). While not as specific as '상호의존적', it is a versatile word for describing strong links between two things.

السياق الثقافي

Be careful not to use this word to describe a situation where one party is actually being exploited; '상호의존적' implies a level of balance that might not exist in abusive situations.

In English, 'interdependence' is often used in political or environmental contexts, similar to Korean. However, in English psychology, 'codependency' often has a negative connotation, whereas '상호의존적' in Korean can be more neutral.

The 'Complex Interdependence' theory by Keohane and Nye is often translated as '복합적 상호의존'. Korean environmentalist Choi Yeol often uses this word to describe the relationship between humans and nature. Economic reports on Korea-Japan-China relations frequently use this term.
