Review Summary

  • Statement + ไหม?
  • Subject + Verb + Question Word

أخطاء شائعة

Thai keeps the word order consistent. Don't move the question word to the front!

Wrong: ใครคุณคือ? (Who are you?)
صحيح: คุณคือใคร? (You are who?)

Question particles like 'mai' almost always come at the very end of the sentence.

Wrong: ไหมคุณกินข้าว? (Do you eat rice?)
صحيح: คุณกินข้าวไหม? (You eat rice [particle]?)

Don't mix a specific question word (where) with a yes/no particle (mai) in the same sentence.

Wrong: คุณไปที่ไหนไหม? (Where are you going?)
صحيح: คุณไปที่ไหน? (You go where?)

Next Steps

You are doing great! Keep practicing these patterns and they will become second nature.

أسئلة شائعة (6)

No, it is strictly for yes/no questions. Use words like arai (what) for other types.
Yes, you can attach it to any verb like kin (eat) or pai (go).
No, never. Always keep it where the missing information belongs.
Just point and say nii kue arai? (What is this?).
Nope! Keep the sentence exactly as it is for a statement, then just add ไหม.
Thai grammar is 'in-situ', meaning the word stays where the answer would be.
