Es gibt... (There is / There are)

Mit There is/are sagst du, dass etwas existiert oder irgendwo ist. Achte darauf, ob singular oder plural ist.

Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

Use 'There is' for one thing and 'There are' for two or more to say something exists.

  • Use 'There is' (or 'There's') for singular nouns: 'There is a cat.'
  • Use 'There are' for plural nouns: 'There are two cats.'
  • Swap the order for questions: 'Is there a cat?' or 'Are there cats?'
There + is/are + 📦 (Object) + 📍 (Location)

Overview

How This Grammar Works

Im Englischen braucht jeder Satz ein Subjekt. Normalerweise ist das eine Person wie I, you oder der Pizzabote. Aber was ist, wenn du einfach nur sagen willst, dass etwas existiert?
Du kannst einen Satz nicht einfach mit Is a cat on the table beginnen. Das klingt, als wärst du ein Roboter, dessen Batterie leer ist. Hier kommt there ins Spiel.
In diesem Kontext bedeutet there nicht dort (der Ort). Stattdessen ist es ein Dummy-Subjekt. Es ist nur ein Platzhalter, der die Tür offenhält, damit der Rest des Satzes eintreten kann.
Der eigentliche Fokus des Satzes kommt *nach* dem Verb. Wenn du sagst There is a coffee on my desk, ist das Wort coffee der wahre Star. Das Verb is oder are muss zu diesem Star passen.

Formation Pattern

1
Diese Sätze zu bilden ist so einfach wie Essen per App zu bestellen. Du brauchst nur drei Teile:
2
Das Wort there (unser Platzhalter).
3
Das Verb to be (entweder is oder are).
4
Das Nomen (das Ding, das existiert).

Conjugation Table

Form Example Translation
Positive Singular There is a cat. Es gibt eine Katze / Da ist eine Katze.
Positive Plural There are two cats. Es gibt zwei Katzen / Da sind zwei Katzen.
Negative Singular There is not (isn't) a cat. Es gibt keine Katze.
Negative Plural There are not (aren't) any cats. Es gibt keine Katzen.
Question Singular Is there a cat? Gibt es eine Katze?
Question Plural Are there any cats? Gibt es Katzen?

When To Use It

Du wirst diese Regel in der digitalen Welt ständig benutzen.
  • Ein Foto beschreiben:
There is ein wunderschöner Sonnenuntergang auf diesem Bild.
  • Verfügbarkeit prüfen:
Is there gerade ein Uber verfügbar?
  • Probleme melden: "There's ein Bug im neuesten Update."
  • Pläne machen:
There are heute Abend drei Filme im Kino.

Common Mistakes

Die größte Falle ist, It is zu benutzen, wenn man There is nehmen sollte. Das passiert, weil viele Sprachen das gleiche Wort für beides benutzen. Wenn du sagst It is a fly in my soup, sagst du, dass die Fliege die Suppe *ist*. Das ist eklig und falsch. Benutze There is, um zu sagen, dass die Fliege an diesem Ort existiert.

Contrast With Similar Patterns

Woher weißt du, wann du There is oder It is benutzt?
  • Nutze There is, um etwas zum ersten Mal einzuführen.
There is ein neues Café in der Hauptstraße.
  • Nutze It is, um mehr Details über diese Sache zu geben.
It is sehr teuer, aber der Kaffee ist toll.

Die "It Is" Falle

Sag niemals

, wenn du meinst, dass eine Katze da ist. It is benutzt du nur für Beschreibungen (It is black) oder Wetter (It is raining). Stell dir vor, du siehst einen Freund und sagst:
It is cold today.
Du beschreibst das Wetter, nicht, dass es existiert.

Stell dir vor, du erzählst deiner Freundin, was in deiner Tasche ist. Du fängst an mit dem Buch, also ist es 'is'.
💬

Faule Sprecher

Im sehr lockeren Englisch hörst du oft, wie Leute für ALLES "There's

Kulturelle Hinweise

Native speakers often use 'There's' even for plural nouns in very casual speech (e.g., 'There's two cars'). However, this is considered grammatically incorrect in exams and formal writing.

In the UK, it is very common to use 'There is' with collective nouns like 'team' or 'staff', but sometimes they use 'There are' if they think of the members as individuals.

In some dialects, you might hear 'There's' used for almost everything, or even 'It's' used in place of 'There's'.

The use of 'there' as a dummy subject dates back to Old English, where 'þær' was used to introduce sentences.

FAQ (8)

In very casual speech, native speakers often do this (e.g., 'There's two dogs'). However, in exams and formal writing, you must use 'There are'.

Use `There is` to introduce something for the first time. Use `It is` to describe that thing later. Example: 'There is a bird. It is blue.'

Usually, we look at the first item. If the first item is singular, we use `There is`. Example: 'There is a bed and two chairs.'

Just swap the words: `Is there...?` or `Are there...?` and add a question mark at the end.

Uncountable nouns always use the singular form: `There is some water.`

Yes! Both are correct. `There are no apples` is slightly more emphatic than `There aren't any apples`.

It is a contraction of 'There are', but it is very rare in writing because it is hard to say. It's better to write 'There are'.

Because it doesn't have a real meaning in the sentence; it just fills the subject position so the real subject can come after the verb.
