Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
Use full pronouns like 'mene' instead of 'me' to show contrast, emphasize a person, or after any preposition.
- Use full forms after prepositions: 'za mene' (for me), never 'za me'.
- Use full forms for contrast: 'Vidi mene, a ne njega' (He sees ME, not HIM).
- Full forms start sentences: 'Njemu sam dao knjigu' (To HIM I gave the book).

Meanings
In Croatian, most personal pronouns have two forms in the Genitive, Dative, and Accusative cases: a short (enclitic) form and a long (full/accented) form. The full form is used when the pronoun carries the sentence's stress.
Emphasis and Contrast
Used to highlight one person specifically or to contrast two different people.
“Meni je to važno, a tebi nije.”
“Pozvali su nju, ali ne i nas.”
Prepositional Use
Whenever a pronoun follows a preposition, the full form must be used (with rare poetic exceptions).
“Idem s njim.”
“Ovo je za tebe.”
Sentence Initial Position
Because short forms (enclitics) cannot start a sentence, the full form is required if the pronoun comes first.
“Meni se spava.”
“Njega ne poznajem.”

Smart Tips
Always reach for the long form (Mene, Tebi, Njega).
The form for 'me' is 'mnom', which is a special full form.
Use the 'A' (but/and) connector with two full forms.
If you would say the word LOUDER in English, use the FULL form in Croatian.

Full forms like 'mene' have a long first vowel, whereas short forms are clipped.

FAQ (8)
In modern standard Croatian, no. In poetry or very old songs, you might see 'za me' or 'u se', but do not use this in speech.
They are historically derived that way. The difference is only in the accent (stress) when speaking.
Not if it follows a preposition. In 'Idem s njim', it's just grammatically required, not necessarily emphatic.
No, you will sound like a robot or like you are constantly arguing. Use short forms for neutral statements.
Both are short forms of 'nju'. 'Ju' is used mainly to avoid repeating the sound 'je' (e.g., 'Vidio ju je').
Use the full form 'nama' for Dative or 'nas' (with stress) for Accusative/Genitive.
Yes, full forms are flexible and can move around, whereas short forms are stuck in the second position.
No, 'mene' is Accusative/Genitive. For the subject 'I', always use 'ja'.
