Conjugating Imperfect Verbs: Regular Patterns
Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
The Imperfect tense describes ongoing or habitual actions in the past by adding specific suffixes to the verb stem.
- For -el verbs, add -ei, -eir, -er, -einq, -eiq, -ein to the stem.
- For -al verbs, add -ayi, -ayir, -ar, -ayinq, -ayiq, -ayin to the stem.
- The negative is formed by adding 'ch' before the verb: 'chem kardum' (I was not reading).
Meanings
The Imperfect tense (Ankatar) is used to describe actions that were in progress in the past or habits that occurred repeatedly.
Ongoing Past
Actions happening at a specific time in the past.
