Introducing Past Tenses: A Look Back

Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

Armenian past tenses use specific suffixes to show if an action was completed or ongoing in the past.

  • Use -eci/-aci for completed actions: 'Yes kardaci' (I read).
  • Use -um ei for ongoing past actions: 'Yes kardum ei' (I was reading).
  • Negative forms add 'ch-' before the verb: 'Yes chkardaci' (I didn't read).
Subject + Verb Root + Suffix (Past) = Completed Action

Don't forget the 'ch-' prefix. It is the most common error for beginners.
🎯

Use the 'Snapshot' rule

If you can draw a line on a timeline for the action, use Aorist.
💬

Omit the pronoun

In casual speech, you can drop the 'Yes' (I) or 'Du' (You) if the context is clear.

Smart Tips

Use the Imperfect tense to show it was a repeated action.

Yes xaxaci amen or. Yes xaxum ei amen or.

Alternate between Aorist for main events and Imperfect for background.

Yes gnal ei ev tesay nran. Yes gnum ei, erb tesay nran.

Always attach 'ch' to the verb, not the pronoun.

Use the Aorist for specific questions.

Question

Einprägen

Visuelle Assoziation

Imagine a camera shutter clicking for the Aorist (completed) and a film projector running for the Imperfect (ongoing).

Rhyme

For the past that's done, add -eci, for the past that's ongoing, add -um ei.

Story

Yesterday I walked (qayleci) to the park. While I was walking (qaylum ei), I saw a bird. I stopped (kangneci) to watch it. It was singing (ergum er).

Kulturelle Hinweise

In Yerevan, people often drop the 'Yes' (I) pronoun as it is implied by the verb ending.

Western Armenian speakers use slightly different suffixes (e.g., -eci vs -etsi).

In formal settings, always include the pronoun for clarity.

The Aorist comes from the Proto-Indo-European aspectual system.
