Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
Armenian past tenses use specific suffixes to show if an action was completed or ongoing in the past.
- Use -eci/-aci for completed actions: 'Yes kardaci' (I read).
- Use -um ei for ongoing past actions: 'Yes kardum ei' (I was reading).
- Negative forms add 'ch-' before the verb: 'Yes chkardaci' (I didn't read).

These tenses allow you to narrate events that happened before the current moment, distinguishing between one-time events and continuous habits.
Completed Past
Actions that finished at a specific time.
“Ես գրեցի նամակը (I wrote the letter).”

Continuous Past
Actions that were in progress in the past.
“Ես կարդում էի գիրք (I was reading a book).”
