Negación en inglés: Usando 'not' correctamente

La negación hace que las frases sean negativas; domina el uso de not con be, can y do/does.

Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

To make a sentence negative in English, place 'not' after the auxiliary verb or the verb 'to be'.

  • With 'to be', put 'not' directly after the verb: 'I am not tired.'
  • With other verbs, use 'do/does' + 'not' + base verb: 'She does not like tea.'
  • With modal verbs like 'can', put 'not' after the modal: 'I cannot swim.'
Subject + (Auxiliary/Be) + not + Verb

Overview

¿Alguna vez has intentado decir I not like coffee y te han mirado raro? Nos pasa a todos al principio. Decir no es tan importante como decir «sí».
De hecho, probablemente usas frases negativas más de lo que crees. Las usas cuando tu comida a domicilio se retrasa o cuando tu teléfono no tiene señal. La negación en inglés puede parecer un rompecabezas.
No puedes simplemente soltar not en cualquier parte.
Primero, el verbo be (am, is, are). Estos verbos son fuertes y no necesitan ayuda.
Simplemente llevan not justo después. Segundo, están los verbos de acción como like, go o want. Estos verbos son un poco más perezosos y necesitan un verbo auxiliar llamado do o does para llevar el not.
Si dices I not want, te falta el auxiliar. ¡Es como intentar comer sopa con un tenedor!

How This Grammar Works

Piensa en los verbos ingleses como si tuvieran diferentes niveles de potencia. El verbo be es el superhéroe de la gramática. Es autosuficiente.
Cuando quieres hacerlo negativo, solo pones not después. I am happy se convierte en I am not happy. ¿Fácil, verdad?
Pero la mayoría de los demás verbos son ciudadanos normales. No pueden manejar la palabra not por sí solos. Necesitan un guardaespaldas o auxiliar: do.
Para la mayoría de las personas (I, you, we, they), el auxiliar es do. Para el grupo S (he, she, it), es does. Una vez que llega el auxiliar, atrapa el not.
A menudo se contraen en don't o doesn't. Cuando esto sucede, el verbo principal vuelve a su forma más simple y pierde cualquier terminación como -s.

Formation Pattern

1
Hacer negativos sigue una receta muy estricta. Sigue estos pasos:
2
Para el verbo be (am, is, are):
3
Sujeto + be + not + complemento.
4
Ejemplo: She is not ready.
5
Para verbos de acción (go, like, work):
6
Sujeto + do/does + not + verbo base.
7
Ejemplo: I do not like pizza. o He does not like pizza.
8
Para verbos modales (can):
9
Sujeto + can + not + verbo base.
10
Ejemplo: I cannot swim.

When To Use It

Usas la negación en casi cualquier conversación. Aquí tienes escenarios reales:
  • Corregir información: I am not from London.
  • Expresar gustos negativos: I don't like spicy food.
  • Rechazar invitaciones: I'm not free tonight.
  • Dar opiniones: It isn't a good movie.
  • Errores de apps: You are not connected to the internet.
La negación te ayuda a poner límites y ser específico. Es la diferencia entre decir sí a todo y tener realmente una opinión.

Common Mistakes

Incluso los estudiantes avanzados cometen estos errores:
  • La trampa del No: Decir I no like en lugar de I don't like. En español usamos no para todo, ¡pero en inglés necesitamos el auxiliar!
  • El error de la doble S: Decir He doesn't likes. Recuerda, el auxiliar does ya tiene la S. El verbo principal se queda simple. ¡Solo uno puede llevar el sombrero de la S!
  • Falta el Be: Decir I not tired. Sigues necesitando el verbo: I am not tired.
  • Doble negación: Decir I don't have nothing. En inglés formal, dos negativos hacen un positivo. Usa I don't have anything.

Contrast With Similar Patterns

Es fácil confundir no y not:
  • No vs. Not: Usa no para respuestas cortas o antes de sustantivos sin artículo (I have no money). Usa not para negar el verbo (I do not have money).
  • Don't vs. Doesn't: Don't es para I, you, we, they. Doesn't es solo para he, she, it.
  • Am not vs. Don't: Am not para estados o descripciones (I am not a student). Don't para acciones (I don't study).

Quick FAQ

¿Puedo usar ain't?

R: ¡La oirás en canciones! Es muy informal. Pero no la uses en una entrevista de trabajo. Usa am not o isn't allí.

¿cannot es una palabra o dos?

R: Normalmente una: cannot. Es más formal que can't.

¿Tengo que usar contracciones?

R: No, ¡pero deberías! I do not like suena muy serio o enfadado. I don't like suena natural.

💡

¡Usa las contracciones!

Las contracciones como 'isn't', 'aren't', 'can't', 'don't' y 'doesn't' son súper comunes cuando hablas inglés o escribes de forma informal. ¡Usarlas te hará sonar más natural! "She isn't here."
⚠️

Cuidado con las dobles negaciones

En inglés estándar, evita usar dos palabras negativas en la misma frase (por ejemplo, 'I don't have no money'). Esto puede confundir y, técnicamente, ¡hace que la frase sea positiva! Usa solo una negación por idea. "I don't have any money."
🎯

La regla de 'Do/Does'

Para casi todos los verbos que no sean 'be' o un verbo modal como 'can', necesitas 'do not' o 'does not' para hacerlos negativos. ¡Es un reto común, así que practica mucho hasta que te salga natural! "I don't like coffee."
🌍

Negación educada

A veces, un 'No, I don't like it' directo puede sonar un poco brusco. Añadir una frase educada como 'I'm sorry, but...' o 'Unfortunately, I can't...' puede suavizar tu negación en inglés. "I'm sorry, but I can't go."
💡

Excepción con 'Am not'

Recuerda que 'am not' no se contrae a 'amn't'. En su lugar, normalmente contraes el sujeto con 'am' para obtener 'I'm not'. Por ejemplo, 'I'm not going'.

Smart Tips

Just put 'not' after the verb. Don't look for any other helper verbs!

He doesn't be happy. He is not happy.

Think of 'does' as a magnet that pulls the 's' away from the main verb.

She does not likes apples. She does not like apples.

Use 'not really' instead of just 'not'. It sounds less aggressive.

I do not like this. I do not really like this.

Avoid all contractions. Use 'do not', 'is not', and 'cannot' in full.

I don't have the file. I do not have the file.

Pronunciación

/doʊnt/ (often sounds like /doʊn/ before a consonant)

The 't' in contractions

In fast speech, the 't' at the end of 'don't' or 'can't' is often a 'stop t', meaning the tongue hits the roof of the mouth but no air is released.

I am NOT going!

Stress on 'not'

If you want to emphasize the negation, put extra stress on the word 'not'.

Falling intonation for statements

I don't know. ↘

Conveys a certain, finished thought.

Memorízalo

Mnemotecnia

Remember the 'Helper Sandwich': The helper verb and the main verb are the bread, and 'not' is the filling!

Asociación visual

Imagine a stop sign held by a small robot named 'Do'. The robot stands in front of the main verb to stop the action.

Rhyme

To say it's false, to say it's wrong, add a 'not' and sing along!

Story

Negative Ned is a character who disagrees with everything. If you say 'I like pizza,' Ned says 'I do NOT like pizza.' If you say 'It is sunny,' Ned says 'It is NOT sunny.' Ned always brings his friends 'Do' and 'Does' to help him disagree.

Desafío

Look around your room and name 5 things that are NOT there using the sentence 'There is not a...' or 'I do not see a...'

Notas culturales

Using full forms like 'do not' instead of 'don't' can sound very forceful or angry in casual conversation. It is often used for emphasis or when someone is being very serious.

The word 'ain't' is a common informal substitute for 'am not', 'is not', 'are not', 'has not', and 'have not'. While common, it is often considered non-standard in professional settings.

In some older or very formal British dialects, you might hear 'I have not' used without 'do-support' even for possession, though this is becoming rare.

The word 'not' comes from the Old English 'nāwiht', which literally meant 'no whit' or 'nothing'.

Preguntas frecuentes (8)

`No` is used as a direct answer or before nouns (`No money`). `Not` is used to negate verbs (`I am not`) or adjectives (`Not happy`).

No, this is a common mistake. You must use a helper verb: `I do not like`.

In English, the third-person 's' moves to the helper verb `do`, making it `does`. The main verb then stays in its base form.

Yes, but it is very informal and considered slang. It is best to avoid it in exams or professional writing.

It goes directly after 'can'. In writing, it is usually one word: `cannot`.

Use `do not` in formal writing (essays, business emails) or when you want to emphasize the negative very strongly.

Yes, but usually in more advanced structures like `Not many people know...` or in short commands like `Not now!`

No! Never use 'do' with 'to be'. Say `I am not`, never `I do not be`.
