Do vs. Does: ¿Cuál es la diferencia?

Usa does para una sola persona o cosa (he, she, it) y do para todos los demás.

Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

'People' is always plural in English, so it pairs with 'do', never 'does'.

  • Use 'do' for 'people' because it acts like 'they' (e.g., People do care).
  • Use 'does' for 'person' because it acts like 'he' or 'she' (e.g., That person does care).
  • In questions, always start with 'Do people...?' (e.g., Do people like this?).

Overview

### Overview
### How This Grammar Works
|---|---|---|
| Negación | Se usa solo no (Él no trabaja) | Se requiere auxiliar + not (He does not work) |
| Pregunta | Solo cambio de entonación (¿Ella estudia?) | Requiere auxiliar al inicio (Does she study?) |
| Sujeto | Auxiliar Negativo | Verbo (Base) | Ejemplo |
|---|---|---|---|
| I / You / We / They | don't | like | I don't like this coffee. |
| He / She / It | doesn't | like | She doesn't like this coffee. |
¡Ojo!
  • Estructura: Do / Does + Sujeto + Verbo en forma base + ?
  • Do you live in Madrid? (¿Vives en Madrid?)
  • Does your brother work at Netflix? (¿Tu hermano trabaja en Netflix?)
  • Do they understand the instructions? (¿Entienden las instrucciones?)
#### 3. Preguntas con Wh- (Wh- Questions)
Si queremos preguntar where (dónde), what (qué), why (por qué), etc., estas palabras van justo antes del auxiliar.
  • Estructura: Wh- word + do / does + Sujeto + Verbo en forma base + ?
  • Where do you want to go? (¿A dónde quieres ir?)
  • What does she think about the project? (¿Qué piensa ella sobre el proyecto?)
  • How often do they travel? (¿Con qué frecuencia viajan?)
Excepción Crítica: Preguntas de Sujeto
Cuando la palabra interrogativa (Who o What) es el sujeto de la acción (es decir, no sabemos quién hace la acción), no usamos do o does.
  • Ejemplo correcto: Who lives here? (¿Quién vive aquí?)
  • Ejemplo incorrecto: Who does live here?
### When To Use It
  • Do you exercise every morning? (¿Haces ejercicio todas las mañanas?)
  • He doesn't check his email on weekends.
  • Does it rain a lot in London? (¿Llueve mucho en Londres?)
  • The sun doesn't rise in the west. (El sol no sale por el oeste).
3. Opiniones y Preferencias
  • What kind of music do you like? (¿Qué tipo de música te gusta?)
  • She doesn't agree with the new policy.
4. Pedir Información Específica
En situaciones de viaje o trámites, do y does son tus mejores aliados para obtener datos.
  • What time does the flight depart? (¿A qué hora sale el vuelo?)
  • How do I get to the museum? (¿Cómo llego al museo?)
5. Énfasis (Uso Avanzado)
A veces, usamos do o does en oraciones afirmativas para dar énfasis, especialmente cuando queremos contradecir a alguien o reafirmar algo.
  • Persona A: You don't like chocolate.
  • Persona B: I do like chocolate! (¡A mí me gusta el chocolate!)
### Common Mistakes
1. El error del Doble Marcado (The Double S)
Este es el error número uno. Como en español decimos
Él no trabajas
(si nos equivocáramos) o simplemente mantenemos la forma, tendemos a decir: Does he works? o He doesn't works.
  • Correcto: Does he work? / He doesn't work.
2. Intentar negar con no directamente
Muchos alumnos dicen: I no like pizza o She no live here.
  • Correcto: I don't like pizza.
3. Usar do/does con el verbo to be
Este es un cruce de cables común. El verbo to be (am, is, are) es el único verbo fuerte que no necesita auxiliares.
  • Error común: Do you are happy? o Does he is a doctor?.
  • La solución: El verbo to be se auxilia a sí mismo.
  • Correcto: Are you happy? / Is he a doctor?.
4. Confundir do como auxiliar y do como verbo principal
  • Error común: What do you for a living? (Falta el verbo principal).
  • Correcto: What do you do for a living?
### Contrast With Similar Patterns
|---|---|---|
| Do / Does | Presente Simple (Hábitos/Hechos) | Do you work here? |
| Am / Is / Are | Presente Continuo (Acciones ahora) | Are you working now? |
| Did | Pasado Simple (Acciones terminadas) | Did you work yesterday? |
| Can | Habilidad o Permiso | Can you work tomorrow? |
Diferencia clave con el Presente Continuo:
Muchos estudiantes confunden Do you study? con Are you studying?.
  • Do you study? pregunta si eres estudiante en general (un hecho de tu vida).
  • Are you studying? pregunta si tienes los libros abiertos frente a ti en este preciso momento.
Diferencia con el verbo to be:
Recuerda la regla de oro: si hay un adjetivo o un lugar, probablemente uses to be. Si hay una acción (verbo), usa do/does.
  • Are you tired? (tired es adjetivo).
  • Do you feel tired? (feel es un verbo de acción/estado).
### Quick FAQ
1. ¿Puedo usar do y does en oraciones afirmativas?
Por ejemplo: I do love you! (¡De verdad te amo!). En el habla cotidiana estándar, simplemente dirías I love you.
  • María es she, por lo tanto usa does: Does María like tea?.
  • Mi empresa (My company) es it, por lo tanto usa does: My company doesn't have an office in Madrid..
  • Mis amigos (My friends) son they, por lo tanto usa do: Do my friends know?.
3. ¿Por qué se dice Who does she love? pero Who loves her??
Recuerda: si Who es el sujeto, no usamos auxiliar do/does y conjugamos el verbo normalmente.
4. ¿Es incorrecto no usar contracciones como do not?
Si estás escribiendo un ensayo académico o un contrato legal, usa do not.

Igual que 'he walks', he/she/it se queda con:
He does his homework.
⚠️

¡No dupliques la '-s'!

Un error común es decir 'She doesn't likes'. Recuerda que 'does' ya lleva la 's', así que el verbo vuelve a su forma base: Does he run?
🎯

Does the team play today?

Preguntas frecuentes (8)

Only when referring to an ethnic group or nation (e.g., 'The Cherokee are a people'). In 99% of cases, it is plural.

Probably because your native language (like Spanish or French) treats the word for people as a singular noun.

The singular is 'person'. One person does, two people do.

Yes, but only if you are talking about multiple different ethnic groups (e.g., 'The peoples of Africa').

No! 'Everyone' is singular and takes 'does'. This is a very common point of confusion.

It is always 'people don't'.

No, 'people' is plural in all dialects of English.

Use the 'They' test: if you can say 'They do', you must say 'People do'.
