Do vs. Does: Qual é a diferença?

Use does para uma única pessoa ou coisa (he, she, it) e do para todo o resto.

Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

'People' is always plural in English, so it pairs with 'do', never 'does'.

  • Use 'do' for 'people' because it acts like 'they' (e.g., People do care).
  • Use 'does' for 'person' because it acts like 'he' or 'she' (e.g., That person does care).
  • In questions, always start with 'Do people...?' (e.g., Do people like this?).

Overview

### Overview
O does é a marca da terceira pessoa do singular (he, she, it), funcionando de forma análoga ao s que adicionamos ao verbo no afirmativo (ex: he eats).
### How This Grammar Works
Em inglês, você não pode simplesmente dizer She not works ou Work you?.
Ele não come
  • Afirmativa: He eats pizza. (O verbo carrega a marca da 3ª pessoa).
  • Negativa: He doesn't eat pizza.
Exemplo: What do you do? (O primeiro do é o auxiliar de pergunta, o segundo é o verbo principal fazer).
Sacou?
### Formation Pattern
Para facilitar, pense sempre na estrutura lógica. O does é para a turma do singular (he, she, it), e o do é para o resto (I, you, we, they).
| Tipo de Frase | Estrutura | Exemplo |
| :--- | :--- | :--- |
| Negativa | Sujeito + do/does + not + verbo base | I don't like sushi. |
| Interrogativa | Do/does + sujeito + verbo base + ? | Does she live here? |
| Wh- Question | Wh-word + do/does + sujeito + verbo base | Where do you work? |
  • Negativa: Sujeito + don't/doesn't + Verbo (Ex: She doesn't want to go to the party.)
  • Interrogativa: Do/Does + Sujeito + Verbo (Ex: Do they speak English?)
### When To Use It
Usamos do e does sempre que falamos de situações no Simple Present.
. Em inglês: I take an Uber to work every day. Para perguntar: Do you take an Uber to work?
  2. 2Fatos Gerais:
A Terra gira em torno do Sol
. Does the Earth orbit the Sun?
  3. 3Preferências e Opiniões:
Eu não gosto de filmes de terror
    . I don't like horror movies.
. What do you do in your free time?
### Common Mistakes
  1. 1Manter o 's' no verbo principal: O aluno escreve Does she eats?. O does já absorveu o s, então o verbo principal deve ficar na forma base: Does she eat?.
  2. 2Esquecer o auxiliar em perguntas: O aluno diz You like pizza? em vez de Do you like pizza?.
  3. 3Confundir do com be: Alguns alunos dizem Do you happy? em vez de Are you happy?. Se você usa um adjetivo, o auxiliar é o verbo to be.
### Contrast With Similar Patterns
| Característica | Do/Does (Simple Present) | To Be (Is/Are) |
| :--- | :--- | :--- |
| Uso principal | Verbos de ação/hábito | Estados, qualidades, localização |
| Negativa | don't / doesn't + verbo | am/is/are + not |
| Exemplo | Do you work? | Are you tired? |
### Quick FAQ
  1. 1Posso usar does com I? Nunca. Does é estritamente para a 3ª pessoa do singular. I, you, we, they sempre usam do.
He doesn't study (correto) vs He doesn't studies (incorreto).

💡

A Regra do 'S'

Assim como em 'he walks', o he/she/it ganha a forma com 's':
He does his homework.
⚠️

Não duplique o '-s'!

Um erro clássico é dizer 'She doesn't likes'.
Does he run fast?
🎯

'The team' vira 'it', então usamos:
Does the team play well?

Nos EUA, grupos são singulares:
The band does a show.
. No Reino Unido, podem ser plurais:

Only when referring to an ethnic group or nation (e.g., 'The Cherokee are a people'). In 99% of cases, it is plural.

Probably because your native language (like Spanish or French) treats the word for people as a singular noun.

The singular is 'person'. One person does, two people do.

Yes, but only if you are talking about multiple different ethnic groups (e.g., 'The peoples of Africa').

No! 'Everyone' is singular and takes 'does'. This is a very common point of confusion.

It is always 'people don't'.
