said e told é um dos grandes marcos para quem está no nível intermediário (B1) de inglês. Para nós, brasileiros, essa confusão é extremamente comum e compreensível, pois no português costumamos usar os verbos dizer e falar de forma muito mais flexível. Muitas vezes, traduzimos mentalmente Ele me disse ou Eu falei para elee acabamos tropeçando na estrutura gramatical exigida pelo inglês.
say e tell não está no significado básico de ambos — que é o ato de comunicar algo —, mas sim na estrutura da frase e em quem recebe a informação. Enquanto um foca na mensagem em si, o outro foca na transmissão da mensagem para alguém específico. Se você quer soar como um profissional em um e-mail para seu chefe ou quer descrever com precisão o que o motorista de Uber comentou durante a viagem, você precisa saber qual dessas duas ferramentas escolher.He said me e por que He told that soa tão estranho para um ouvido nativo. say (cujo passado é said) é focado no conteúdo da mensagem. Ele é o que chamamos de verbo monotransitivo ou intransitivo, dependendo do contexto. Isso significa que o que vem logo após o said é a fala propriamente dita.say, você obrigatoriamente precisará de uma ponte: a preposição to. É exatamente como no português Eu disse para ele. Sem esse
to, a frase desmorona gramaticalmente.tell (cujo passado é told) funciona de uma forma diferente. Ele é inerentemente direcionado. Pense no tell como uma flecha que precisa de um alvo.tell é um verbo ditransitivo: ele geralmente exige um objeto indireto (a pessoa) e um objeto direto (a mensagem). A grande diferença para nós, brasileiros, é que o tell não aceita a preposição to.told to me, você diz apenas told me.
