Si tu as déjà hésité entre say et tell en plein milieu d'une phrase, rassure-toi : c'est l'un des obstacles les plus classiques pour nous, les francophones. Pourquoi ? Parce qu'en français, nous avons un verbe « couteau-suisse » : le verbe « dire ».
On dit quelque chose, on dit à quelqu'un, on dit de faire quelque chose... « Dire » s'occupe de tout. En anglais, la structure de la phrase et l'intention derrière la communication imposent un choix strict entre say et tell.
Comprendre cette distinction est crucial pour atteindre un niveau B1 solide et paraître plus naturel. Ce n'est pas seulement une question de vocabulaire, c'est une question de structure grammaticale. La règle d'or, en gros, c'est que tell se focalise sur la transmission d'une information à une personne, tandis que say se focalise sur le contenu du message lui-même.

### How This Grammar Works
Pour bien comprendre la différence, il faut regarder ce qu'on appelle la transitivité des verbes. En français, on peut dire « Je dis la vérité » (direct) ou « Je dis à Marie » (indirect avec une préposition). En anglais, say et tell ne fonctionnent pas de la même manière au niveau de leur construction.
#### Le cas de Say : Focus sur le message

#### Le cas de Tell : Focus sur l'auditeur
Le verbe tell est ce qu'on appelle un verbe ditransitif. Cela signifie qu'il a besoin d'un objet direct (le message) et d'un objet indirect (la personne). La règle absolue avec tell (dans son sens de rapporter une information), c'est qu'il est suivi immédiatement de la personne à qui l'on parle, sans préposition.
