Wenn du Englisch lernst, stößt du schnell auf zwei Verben, die oft für Verwirrung sorgen: say und tell. Im Deutschen nutzen wir für beides meist das Verb „sagen“. Die richtige Antwort ist He told me. Warum? Weil die englische Grammatik hier eine strikte Trennung vornimmt, die es so im Deutschen nicht gibt.
Im Deutschen ist unser Verb „sagen“ sehr flexibel. Wir sagen: „Ich sage ihm die Wahrheit“ oder „Ich sage die Wahrheit“. Das Verb bleibt gleich, egal ob ein Empfänger (Dativobjekt) dabei ist oder nicht.
Im Englischen ist das anders. Hier bestimmt die Anwesenheit eines Empfängers (einer Person, die zuhört) das Verb selbst. Das ist für uns Deutsche anfangs ungewohnt, weil wir dazu neigen, die deutsche Struktur Sagen + Dativ eins zu eins zu übersetzen.

### How This Grammar Works
Der wichtigste Unterschied liegt in der sogenannten Transitivität. Im Deutschen nutzen wir für „sagen“ oft ein Dativobjekt, wenn wir eine Person einbeziehen. Auf Englisch ist tell ein ditransitives Verb, das zwingend ein indirektes Objekt (die Person) und ein direktes Objekt (die Information) verlangt.
Wenn du also tell benutzt, musst du fast immer sagen, *wem* du etwas erzählst. Ein Satz wie He told. ist grammatikalisch unvollständig, es sei denn, der Kontext ist extrem spezifisch. Du musst sagen: He told me oder He told the team.

Du benutzt say, wenn der Fokus auf dem Inhalt liegt. Wenn du zum Beispiel ein Schild liest, auf dem „Betreten verboten“ steht, sagst du: The sign says 'No entry'. Hier ist tell unmöglich, da ein Schild keine Person „informiert“ im Sinne eines Dialogs.
Auch bei allgemeinen Aussagen oder Zitaten ist say dein bester Freund. Wenn du in der Uni ein Referat hältst, nutzt du say für die Quellenarbeit: The study says that....
Du benutzt tell, wenn du eine Geschichte erzählst oder jemanden direkt ansprichst. Das ist der „Erzähl-Modus“. Wenn du am Stammtisch von deinem letzten Urlaub berichtest, sagst du: I told my friends about my trip.
