Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
Use the Zero Conditional to talk about things that are always true, like scientific facts or your daily habits.
- Use Present Simple in both the 'if' clause and the result clause: 'If I sleep late, I feel tired.'
- You can replace 'if' with 'when' or 'whenever' without changing the meaning of the sentence.
- Use a comma if the 'if' clause comes first; no comma is needed if the result comes first.
Overview
When I get home, I take off my shoes.simple present en ambas cláusulas (la de la condición y la del resultado). Por ejemplo: If I have a lot of work, I stay late at the office.ley o regla. Si cambias el tiempo verbal, cambias la intención comunicativa.if o when) y la cláusula de resultado (cláusula principal). Ambas deben ir obligatoriamente en simple present. If / When + Sujeto + Verbo en presente simple, Sujeto + Verbo en presente simple. If I drink coffee late | I don't sleep well | If I drink coffee late, I don't sleep well. |When it rains | I take the bus | When it rains, I take the bus. |I don't sleep well if I drink coffee late. |I take the bus when it rains.
- Correcto:
If I'm tired, I go to bed. - Correcto:
I go to bed if I'm tired.
- Ejemplo:
If she exercises in the morning, she feels great.(Si ella hace ejercicio por la mañana, se siente genial).
- 1Negaciones: Usamos los auxiliares
do not(don't) odoes not(doesn't) según corresponda.
- Ejemplo:
If they don't study, they fail the exams.
If I have a meeting at 9:00, I arrive at 8:45.(Estás estableciendo tu estándar de puntualidad). When I finish my work, I always check my personal email.(Es una secuencia de acciones habitual).
If I eat spicy food, I get a stomachache.(Una reacción física constante). When I listen to jazz, I feel relaxed.(Una respuesta emocional predecible). My dog hides under the bed if there are fireworks.(Un comportamiento animal habitual).
If you use the last of the milk, you buy some more.(Una regla de convivencia). When a client sends an inquiry, we respond within 24 hours.(Una política de empresa).
If you press this button, the screen turns off.(Cómo funciona un dispositivo). The app crashes if you open too many windows.(Un error recurrente).
If y When:When para situaciones que sabes que van a pasar (ej. When the sun goes down...) y usa If para situaciones que son posibles pero no garantizadas (ej.If I have free time...). Sin embargo, en el contexto de hábitos, ambos suelen llevar al mismo resultado habitual.will (Confusión con el First Conditional):- *Error:*
If I drink coffee, I will not sleep.(Dicho como un hábito general). - *Corrección:*
If I drink coffee, I don't sleep. - *Por qué ocurre:* En español, a veces decimos
Si tomo café, no dormiré
If he study hard, he gets good grades. - *Corrección:*
If he studies hard, he gets good grades.
If I don't see nothing, I don't buy it. - *Corrección:*
If I don't see anything, I don't buy it.

If + Present, Present | If + Present, Will + Verb |If it rains, I get wet. (Siempre me pasa). | If it rains, I will stay home. (Hablo de hoy/mañana). |If I finish the report, I send it to you, le estás diciendo que esa es tu rutina habitual (cada vez que terminas un informe, se lo envías). Si le dices: If I finish the report, I will send it to you, te estás refiriendo a un informe específico en el que estás trabajando ahora mismo y que le enviarás cuando esté listo.can en un condicional cero?can o must pueden aparecer en la cláusula de resultado si expresan una capacidad o necesidad habitual. Por ejemplo: If you don't have a ticket, you can't enter the stadium. If it rained, we played inside. I don't go to the gym unless I have a partner. Zero Conditional Structure

Smart Tips
Always use the Zero Conditional. Using 'will' makes it sound like a prediction rather than a law of nature.
Use 'whenever' instead of 'if' to emphasize that the habit happens every single time.
Use the imperative in the second clause to be clear and concise.
Read the sentence out loud. If you naturally pause after the first part, you need a comma.
Pronunciación
The Comma Pause
When the 'if' clause comes first, there is a slight rising intonation at the end of the clause, followed by a brief pause.
Contraction Stress
In the negative form, the word 'don't' or 'doesn't' is usually stressed to emphasize the condition.
Conditional Rise-Fall
If you heat ice ⤴, it melts ⤵.
The rise indicates the condition is being set, and the fall indicates the certain result.

Zero = Zero doubt. If it's a fact, keep the tense intact (Present + Present).
Asociación visual
Imagine a light switch. If you flip the switch (condition), the light turns on (result). It happens every single time without fail.
Rhyme
When the fact is always true, Present Simple is what you do.
Story
Think of a robot named 'Zero'. Zero only follows rules. If Zero sees a red light, Zero stops. If Zero hears a command, Zero obeys. Zero doesn't think about the future; he only reacts to the present.

Desafío
Write down 5 things that are always true about your morning routine using 'If... I...'. For example: 'If I wake up, I check my phone.'
Notas culturales
British speakers often use the Zero Conditional to discuss the weather as an absolute fact of life. 'If the sun comes out, everyone goes to the park.'
In US business culture, Zero Conditionals are used to state company policies clearly and firmly. 'If you are late three times, you receive a warning.'
Scientists globally use this structure to describe laws of nature in English, emphasizing that the result is universal and not subject to opinion.
The term 'Zero Conditional' is a pedagogical label created by grammarians in the 20th century to categorize conditional types for English learners.

Yes! In the Zero Conditional, `when` and `if` are usually interchangeable because the result is a certainty. 'When it rains, I stay home' is just as correct as 'If it rains, I stay home.'
It's called 'Zero' because there is zero doubt about the result. It describes a 100% certain cause-and-effect relationship.
Only if the `if` clause comes first. If you say 'I get sick if I eat nuts,' you don't need a comma. If you say 'If I eat nuts, I get sick,' the comma is required.
Yes. Modals like `can`, `must`, or `should` can replace the Present Simple in the result clause to express rules. 'If you are 18, you can vote.'
Technically, no. For past habits, we use 'used to' or the Past Simple. The Zero Conditional is strictly for things that are true `now` and `always`.
Zero is for `general truths` (If I eat, I feel better). First is for `specific future possibilities` (If I eat this sandwich now, I will feel better later).
Yes. `Unless` means 'if not'. 'Plants die unless they get water' is the same as 'Plants die if they don't get water.'
It is neutral. It is used in everything from casual conversations about habits to formal scientific papers.
