The Zero Conditional expresses facts, scientific laws, and habits that are always true when a specific condition is met.
- Use Present Simple in both clauses: 'If you heat ice, it melts.'
- Use 'when' instead of 'if' for things that happen regularly: 'When it rains, the grass gets wet.'
- Use a comma only if the 'if' clause comes first: 'If it rains, I stay home.'
Overview
If A happens, B happens. Por ejemplo:If you press the button, the light turns on.(Si presionas el botón, la luz se enciende). When you press the button, the light turns on.(Cuando presionas el botón, la luz se enciende).
When it rains, the grass gets wet.(Cuando llueve, la hierba se moja). If I don't sleep, I feel tired.(Si no duermo, me siento cansado).
If you freeze water, it becomes solid.
Water becomes solid if you freeze it.
If you are tired, go to bed.(Si estás cansado, ve a la cama). When the phone rings, don't answer it.(Cuando el teléfono suene, no lo respondas).
If you don't water plants, they die.
If he eats peanuts, he gets sick. Zero Conditional? Aquí tienes los escenarios más comunes donde brilla esta estructura:If you mix red and blue, you get purple.(Si mezclas rojo y azul, obtienes morado). When the sun goes down, it gets dark.(Cuando el sol se pone, se oscurece). If you heat water to 100 degrees, it boils.(Si calientas agua a 100 grados, hierve).
manual de usuario personal. If I drink coffee at night, I don't sleep well.(Si bebo café por la noche, no duermo bien). When I'm stressed, I listen to music.(Cuando estoy estresado, escucho música). If my team loses, I feel sad for the rest of the day.(Si mi equipo pierde, me siento triste el resto del día).
If the light is red, you must stop.(Si la luz está roja, debes parar). When you arrive at the hotel, ask for Mr. Smith.(Cuando llegues al hotel, pregunta por el Sr. Smith). If you want to save the document, press Ctrl+S.(Si quieres guardar el documento, presiona Ctrl+S).
If the boss is happy, the meeting is short.(Si el jefe está feliz, la reunión es corta). When there is a lot of traffic, I am late for work.(Cuando hay mucho tráfico, llego tarde al trabajo).
will (El error más común)Si llueve, me mojaré. Ese
mojaré es futuro. Por eso, muchos estudiantes dicen: If it rains, I will get wet.Zero Conditional: If it rains, I get wet.will, estás pasando al First Conditional, que se usa para una situación específica en el futuro.- Incorrecto:
If you heat ice, it will melt.(Suena como si estuvieras prediciendo el futuro de un trozo de hielo específico). - Correcto:
If you heat ice, it melts.(Es una ley física general).
If she exercise, she feel better. - Correcto:
If she exercises, she feels better.
Si no haces nada.... Usamos
no y nada (doble negación).
If you don't do nothing... - Correcto:
If you don't do anything...oIf you do nothing...
If + Present Simple, Present Simple | If + Present Simple, Will + Verb |If I eat peanuts, I die. (Soy alérgico, es un hecho médico). | If I eat this, I will be full. (Hablo de esta comida específica ahora). |If it rains, the ground gets wet. (Es una ley física). | If it rains tomorrow, I will stay home.
First.
If you don't have a passport, you can't travel abroad.(Es una regla general).
If o When. If I get a headache, I take an aspirin.(A veces me duele la cabeza). When I get a headache, I take an aspirin.(Me pasa a menudo y ya sé qué hacer).
If you want to learn English, practice every day.(Es un consejo basado en una verdad universal: la práctica hace al maestro).
Zero Conditional. ¡A practicar!Zero Conditional Structure

Smart Tips
Check that both verbs are in the Present Simple. Do not use 'will'.
Try swapping them. If the meaning stays the same, you are looking at a Zero Conditional.
Use the imperative in the second clause for a clearer, more professional tone.
Look for the 'If'. If it's at the start, put a comma in the middle. If it's in the middle, remove all commas.

Preguntas frecuentes (8)
No. If you use `will`, it becomes a First Conditional, which is for specific future events, not general truths.
They are mostly interchangeable. `When` suggests the condition happens more frequently or certainly than `if`.
Only if the `if` clause comes first. If the result clause is first, no comma is used.
Yes, but you must use the Past Simple in both clauses. 'If it rained, we played inside.' This is called the Past Real Conditional.
It is neutral. It is used in both very formal scientific papers and very informal daily speech.
Yes! This is very common for instructions. 'If you are tired, go to bed.'
Because there is 'zero' doubt about the result. It is a 100% certainty.
Yes. `Unless` means `if not`. 'Plants die unless they get water.'
