Use the 'tai' suffix attached to the stem of a verb to express your personal desires.
- Drop the 'masu' from the polite verb form: {食べます|たべます} → {食べ|たべ} + たい = {食べたい|たべたい}.
- The object of your desire usually takes the particle 'ga' instead of 'o': {水が飲みたい|みずがのみたい}.
- To make it negative, change 'tai' to 'taku nai': {行きたくない|いきたくない} (I don't want to go).
Overview
I want to... It is formed by taking the masu-stem of a verb and adding たい. 食べます → 食べたい (want to eat), 行きます → 行きたい (want to go), 飲みます → 飲みたい (want to drink), します → したい (want to do). たい conjugates like an い-adjective: negative = たくない (don't want to), past = たかった (wanted to), past negative = たくなかった (didn't want to).Tai-form Conjugation
