Expressing Desire: たい (tai) — "I want to..."

Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

Use the 'tai' suffix attached to the stem of a verb to express your personal desires.

  • Drop the 'masu' from the polite verb form: {食べます|たべます} → {食べ|たべ} + たい = {食べたい|たべたい}.
  • The object of your desire usually takes the particle 'ga' instead of 'o': {水が飲みたい|みずがのみたい}.
  • To make it negative, change 'tai' to 'taku nai': {行きたくない|いきたくない} (I don't want to go).
Verb Stem + たい (tai) = I want to [Verb]

نظرة عامة

The たい (tai) form expresses the speaker's desire to do something — I want to... It is formed by taking the masu-stem of a verb and adding たい. 食べます → 食べたい (want to eat), 行きます → 行きたい (want to go), 飲みます → 飲みたい (want to drink), します → したい (want to do). たい conjugates like an い-adjective: negative = たくない (don't want to), past = たかった (wanted to), past negative = たくなかった (didn't want to).
An important cultural note: たい is used primarily for the speaker's own desires (first person). Using it for other people's wants sounds presumptuous in Japanese — you cannot directly state what another person wants. For third person, use たがっている (appears to want): 彼は行きたがっている (He appears to want to go).
In questions, たい is fine: 何を食べたいですか (What do you want to eat?). The object particle can be either を or が with たい — both are correct: 寿司を食べたい and 寿司が食べたい. Using が emphasizes the desire, while を is more neutral.
Add です for politeness: 日本に行きたいです (I want to go to Japan).
