Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
Croatian has exactly five pure vowels (a, e, i, o, u) that are always pronounced the same way, regardless of their position.
- Vowels are always short and crisp: 'a' as in 'father', 'e' as in 'bed', 'i' as in 'see', 'o' as in 'door', 'u' as in 'boot'.
- Never diphthongize: Do not glide between sounds; keep each vowel distinct and stable.
- Vowel length matters: While the quality is constant, some vowels are held longer, which can change word meaning.
