Tense Changes in Reported Speech
Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
When reporting past speech, shift the verb tense one step back to maintain logical consistency in Azerbaijani.
- Use the -di (past) suffix for reported events: 'O gəldi' (He came) becomes 'O gəldiyini dedi' (He said he came).
- If the original verb is present, shift it to past: 'Gəlir' (He is coming) becomes 'Gəldiyini' (That he came).
- Always use the -dik/-diy/-diyi participle forms to connect the reported clause to the main verb.

This rule allows you to convey information originally spoken by someone else, adjusting the verb tense to reflect that the event happened in the past relative to the reporting moment.
