Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

The present transgressive describes an action happening simultaneously with the main verb, used primarily in formal, literary Czech.

  • Use it only for simultaneous actions with the same subject: 'Jda domů, zpíval.' (Walking home, he sang.)
  • Form it from the 3rd person plural present stem: 'dělají' -> 'dělaje'.
  • Endings are -e/-ě for masculine, -íc for feminine/neuter.
Stem (3rd pl) + -e/-íc = Simultaneous Action
