A1 Negation 1 min read آسان

Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

When you negate a verb, the direct object usually changes from the Accusative case to the Genitive case.

  • If you have an object in a positive sentence, it is Accusative: 'Turiu knygą' (I have a book).
  • When you add 'ne' (not), the object becomes Genitive: 'Neturiu knygos' (I don't have a book).
  • This rule applies to most transitive verbs and existential 'to be' statements.
Subject + (ne + Verb) + Object(Genitive)

Meanings

The Genitive case is used to mark the direct object of a negated verb, indicating the total absence or non-existence of the object.

Direct Object Negation

Used when the action of the verb is negated.

“Jis neperka duonos.”

“Mes nematome mašinos.”

2
