Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
When you negate a verb, the direct object usually changes from the Accusative case to the Genitive case.
- If you have an object in a positive sentence, it is Accusative: 'Turiu knygą' (I have a book).
- When you add 'ne' (not), the object becomes Genitive: 'Neturiu knygos' (I don't have a book).
- This rule applies to most transitive verbs and existential 'to be' statements.
Meanings
The Genitive case is used to mark the direct object of a negated verb, indicating the total absence or non-existence of the object.
Direct Object Negation
Used when the action of the verb is negated.
“Jis neperka duonos.”
“Mes nematome mašinos.”
Existential Negation
Used to express that something does not exist.

“Kambaryje nėra stalo.”
