Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

Use the auxiliary verb 'htjeti' (to want/will) plus the infinitive of your main verb to talk about the future.

  • Use short forms (ću, ćeš, će, ćemo, ćete, će) for standard affirmative sentences: 'Ja ću raditi' (I will work).
  • Place the short form before the infinitive: 'On će doći' (He will come).
  • For negatives, add 'ne-' to the start of the auxiliary: 'Neću raditi' (I will not work).
Subject + (Short form of 'htjeti') + Infinitive Verb

Ja ću raditi sutra.

Word order is okay, but forgetting the shortened infinitive is a missed opportunity for natural flow.

Ću raditi.

Ja ću raditi.

Enclitics cannot start a sentence.

Hoćeš ići?

Hoćeš li ići?

Missing the question particle 'li'.

Raditi ću.

Incorrect infinitive form before enclitic.

Ne ću raditi.

Neću raditi.

Writing 'ne' and 'ću' as two words.

On će raditi sutra.

This is actually correct, but learners often struggle with placing 'će' correctly in complex sentences.

Hoću li ja raditi?

Redundant subject usage.

On će doći sutra, hoće?

On će doći sutra, zar ne?

Using 'hoće' as a tag question.

Overusing pronouns in formal contexts.

💡

Enclitic Placement

Always keep the enclitic (ću, ćeš...) close to the verb. Don't let other words get in the way.
⚠️

Don't start with enclitics

Never start a sentence with 'ću' or 'će'. Start with the subject or another word.
🎯

Shorten the infinitive

In casual speech, drop the final 'i' of the infinitive (e.g., 'radit ću'). It sounds much more natural.
💬

Politeness

Use the full question form 'Hoćete li...' when asking someone for a favor to sound more polite.

Smart Tips

Drop the final 'i' in the infinitive.

Ja ću raditi. Radit ću.

If you can replace it with 'want', use 'hoću'. If not, use 'ću'.

Hoću raditi (I will work). Radit ću (I will work).

Always remember the 'li' particle.

Hoćeš raditi? Hoćeš li raditi?

Attach it to the first word.

Sutra ja ću raditi. Sutra ću ja raditi.

उच्चारण

Enclitic Stress

In coastal regions, you might hear 'ću' attached to the verb in unique ways, or the use of 'ćemo' for singular 'I will' in very specific slang.

Very standard usage, often uses the shortened infinitive in daily speech.

The future tense originated from the verb 'htjeti' (to want) + infinitive, similar to the English 'I want to go' evolving into 'I will go'.
