This Is Where We’re Gonna Bury The ISS

In the middle of the South Pacific, as far from land as you can you possibly get, lies a graveyard.

दक्षिण प्रशांत महासागर के बीच में, जहाँ आप ज़मीन से जितना दूर हो सकते हैं, वहाँ एक कब्रिस्तान है।

Not a graveyard for people. Or pets. Instead, the bodies resting  here belong to hundreds of broken up spacecraft and satellites.

लोगों के लिए कब्रिस्तान नहीं। या पालतू जानवर। इसके बजाय, यहाँ आराम कर रहे शरीर सैकड़ों टूटे हुए अंतरिक्ष यान और उपग्रहों के हैं।

When the International Space  Station gets decommissioned, it too will call this place home.

जब अंतर्राष्ट्रीय अंतरिक्ष स्टेशन को सेवामुक्त कर दिया जाएगा, तो वह भी इसी जगह को अपना घर कहेगा।

But you might be wondering, “Is dumping all our space junk into one  spot in the ocean really a good idea?’ And if so, you wouldn’t be alone.

लेकिन आप सोच रहे होंगे, 'क्या हमारे सारे अंतरिक्ष कचरे को समुद्र में एक ही जगह पर फेंकना वाकई एक अच्छा विचार है?' और अगर ऐसा है, तो आप अकेले नहीं होंगे।

Some researchers and environmentalists are worried that all this debris might  be taking a toll on the environment.

कुछ शोधकर्ता और पर्यावरणविद् चिंतित हैं कि यह सारा मलबा पर्यावरण पर भारी पड़ सकता है।

But the alternative could be even worse.

लेकिन इसका विकल्प और भी बुरा हो सकता है।

The official name for this spacecraft cemetery  is the South Pacific Ocean Uninhabited Area.

इस अंतरिक्ष यान कब्रिस्तान का आधिकारिक नाम दक्षिण प्रशांत महासागर का निर्जन क्षेत्र है।

If you wanted to get there, I don’t know why you did, but if you do, you’d have to sail some 2, 700 kilometers  from the nearest spot of land… either the Ducie Island atoll to the north, the islet Motu Nui to the northeast, or Maher Island to the south.

अगर तुम वहाँ जाना चाहते थे, मुझे नहीं पता क्यों, लेकिन अगर तुम जाते हो, तो तुम्हें ज़मीन के सबसे नज़दीकी स्थान से लगभग 2,700 किलोमीटर की यात्रा करनी होगी... या तो उत्तर में ड्यूसी आइलैंड एटोल, उत्तर-पूर्व में मोटू नुई द्वीप, या दक्षिण में माहेर आइलैंड।

At the middle of this graveyard is Point Nemo, which means ‘no one’ in Latin, because it’s literally the most  isolated place in the world.

इस कब्रिस्तान के बीच में पॉइंट नीमो है, जिसका लैटिन में मतलब है 'कोई नहीं', क्योंकि यह सचमुच दुनिया की सबसे अलग-थलग जगह है।

But for those who haven’t, the  name is also a nod to the character in the 1870’s classic Twenty  Thousand Leagues Under the Seas, Captain Nemo.

लेकिन जो नहीं समझे, उनके लिए यह नाम 1870 के दशक के क्लासिक 'ट्वेंटी थाउज़ेंड लीग्स अंडर द सीज़' के किरदार कैप्टन नीमो को भी श्रद्धांजलि है।

But it’s not just people and land that are notably absent from the area.

लेकिन इस इलाके से सिर्फ़ लोग और ज़मीन ही गायब नहीं हैं।

There might not be very many fish or  other sea creatures there, either.

शायद वहाँ ज़्यादा मछलियाँ या दूसरे समुद्री जीव भी न हों।

That’s because Point Nemo lies  within the South Pacific Gyre… a kind of ocean desert where the  swirling ocean currents around it pull away most nutrients.

ऐसा इसलिए है क्योंकि पॉइंट नीमो दक्षिण प्रशांत गायर के भीतर स्थित है... एक तरह का समुद्री रेगिस्तान जहाँ इसके चारों ओर घूमती समुद्री धाराएँ ज़्यादातर पोषक तत्वों को दूर खींच लेती हैं।
