This Is Where We’re Gonna Bury The ISS

In the middle of the South Pacific, as far from land as you can you possibly get, lies a graveyard.

وسط اقیانوس آرام جنوبی، دورترین نقطه ممکن از خشکی، یه قبرستان وجود داره.

Not a graveyard for people. Or pets. Instead, the bodies resting  here belong to hundreds of broken up spacecraft and satellites.

قبرستان آدما نیست. یا حیوانات خونگی. در عوض، اجسادی که اینجا استراحت می‌کنن متعلق به صدها فضاپیمای شکسته و ماهواره هستن.

When the International Space  Station gets decommissioned, it too will call this place home.

وقتی ایستگاه فضایی بین‌المللی از رده خارج بشه، اون هم به خونه این مکان تبدیل می‌شه.

But you might be wondering, “Is dumping all our space junk into one  spot in the ocean really a good idea?’ And if so, you wouldn’t be alone.

ولی شاید بپرسید، «ریختن تمام زباله‌های فضایی‌مون تو یه نقطه از اقیانوس واقعاً ایده خوبیه؟» و اگه اینطوره، تنها نیستید.

Some researchers and environmentalists are worried that all this debris might  be taking a toll on the environment.

بعضی از محققان و محیط‌بانان نگرانن که این همه زباله ممکنه به محیط زیست آسیب بزنه.

But the alternative could be even worse.

ولی جایگزینش می‌تونه حتی بدتر باشه.

The official name for this spacecraft cemetery  is the South Pacific Ocean Uninhabited Area.

اسم رسمی این قبرستان فضاپیماها، منطقه غیرمسکونی اقیانوس آرام جنوبی هست.

If you wanted to get there, I don’t know why you did, but if you do, you’d have to sail some 2, 700 kilometers  from the nearest spot of land… either the Ducie Island atoll to the north, the islet Motu Nui to the northeast, or Maher Island to the south.

اگه می‌خواستید به اونجا برید، نمی‌دونم چرا، ولی اگه می‌رید، باید حدود ۲۷۰۰ کیلومتر از نزدیک‌ترین نقطه خشکی رو دریانوردی کنید... چه جزیره دوکی در شمال، چه جزیره موتونی در شمال شرقی، یا جزیره ماهر در جنوب.

At the middle of this graveyard is Point Nemo, which means ‘no one’ in Latin, because it’s literally the most  isolated place in the world.

وسط این قبرستان نقطه نمو قرار داره، که به لاتین یعنی «هیچ‌کس»، چون واقعاً دورافتاده‌ترین نقطه دنیاست.

But for those who haven’t, the  name is also a nod to the character in the 1870’s classic Twenty  Thousand Leagues Under the Seas, Captain Nemo.

ولی برای اونایی که متوجه نشدن، این اسم هم اشاره‌ای به شخصیت کلاسیک دهه ۱۸۷۰، کاپیتان نمو در «بیست هزار فرسخ زیر دریا» هست.

But it’s not just people and land that are notably absent from the area.

ولی فقط آدما و خشکی نیستن که به طور قابل توجهی از این منطقه غایبن.

There might not be very many fish or  other sea creatures there, either.

ممکنه ماهی یا موجودات دریایی دیگه زیادی هم اونجا نباشن.

That’s because Point Nemo lies  within the South Pacific Gyre… a kind of ocean desert where the  swirling ocean currents around it pull away most nutrients.

چون نقطه نمو در چرخه اقیانوس آرام جنوبی قرار داره... یه جور صحرای اقیانوسی که جریان‌های اقیانوسی گردابی اطرافش بیشتر مواد مغذی رو دور می‌کشن.
