Exceptions to Rules
Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
Romanian exceptions are historical fossils that break modern rules but follow ancient patterns of Latin and Slavic evolution.
- Plurals can change gender entirely, like `un scaun` (masculine) becoming `două scaune` (feminine/neuter).
- Verbs like `a fi` use different roots (suppletion) for different persons: `sunt` vs `ești`.
- Nouns like `om` have completely different plural roots: `oameni`, reflecting ancient phonetic shifts.
Overview
How This Grammar Works
-i in plural. Feminine nouns usually add -e or -i.-uri or -e. But some nouns are rebels. They are called 'ambigena' or neuter.o becomes oa.e becomes ea. Some words are 'singularia tantum'. They only exist in the singular form.Formation Pattern
o to oa transitions.
om becomes oameni.
Cap can be capete, capi, or capuri.
lor for the definite plural.
lui prefix or the inflected ending. Usually, use lui for masculine names.
lui. Example: lui Carmen.
moaște. These never have a singular form.
When To Use It
capi when talking about criminal leaders. Use capete when counting physical heads.capuri when describing geographical capes. This level of detail shows true mastery. Use the correct Genitive when writing a formal email.Mariei sounds much better than la Maria. Use these forms in job interviews. It shows you respect the language's complexity.ouă for breakfast is basic. Knowing why it is ouă is C2 excellence. When Not To Use It
vremi instead of vremuri sounds very poetic.-uri pattern.laptop. Avoid using the Vocative case exceptions in formal writing. Saying omule! is great for a friend.zori.zori de zi. Using these incorrectly makes you sound like a beginner. Even if you are trying to be fancy.Common Mistakes
ou. They might try to say ouri. That sounds like a brand of juice. The correct form is always ouă. Another trap is the word sânge. It is usually singular. Using sângiuri will get you very strange looks. People often mess up feminine names in the Genitive. They say a Maria instead of Mariei. This is a very common 'foreigner' mistake. Another big one is the plural of roată. It is roți, not roate. Native children often make this mistake too. Don't feel bad if you do. Just correct it and move on. Mixing up vream and voiam is another classic. Both are now technically accepted. But voiam is the standard choice. Avoid the hybrid vroiam at all costs. It is the ultimate grammar 'no-no' in Romania.Contrast With Similar Patterns
-s.sora (sister) and surori (sisters). The vowel shifts from o to u.'s or of.băiat to băiatului. It is more like Latin or German. Think of the neuter gender as a bridge.Quick FAQ

Semantic Plurals
-i (like capi), and the most 'physical' in -e (like capete).Poetic Plurals
vremi or aripi. In modern life, we use vremuri and aripi. Using the old ones makes you sound like a 19th-century romantic.Smart Tips
It's almost certainly neuter. Expect the plural to end in -uri or -e.
Stick to 'voiam' to avoid the 'vroiam' controversy in formal settings.
Remember that numbers 2-19 use the noun directly, but 20+ use 'de'.
Check the context. If it's abstract, it's often -uri; if it's concrete, it's often -e or -i.
発音
The Final 'i'
In words like 'oameni' or 'frați', the final 'i' is not a full vowel but a palatalization of the previous consonant.
Diphthong 'oa'
The 'oa' in 'oameni' or 'moară' is a single syllable sound, starting with a closed 'o' and sliding to 'a'.
