Habitual Actions
Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
Use the Present Tense to describe actions that happen regularly, repeatedly, or as a general fact.
- Use the present tense for daily habits: 'Eu mănânc micul dejun la ora 8.'
- Use it for general truths: 'Soarele răsare la est.'
- Use it for scheduled future events: 'Trenul pleacă la ora 10.'
Overview
used to or would. Instead, you rely on two main tenses: the Present and the Imperfect. Whether you’re ordering your usual coffee or telling a friend about your childhood, this is the grammar you’ll use. Think of it as the auto-pilot mode of language.I am eating and I eat every morning.
How This Grammar Works
Prezent). For habits that stayed in the past, you switch to the Imperfect Tense (Imperfect). It’s like a grammar traffic light.Formation Pattern
Prezent. For the past, use Imperfect.
mereu (always) or des (often).
Eu (Subject) + beau (Present Verb) + cafea (Object) + zilnic (Adverb).
Eu (Subject) + beam (Imperfect Verb) + cafea (Object) + zilnic (Adverb).
When To Use It
mă spăl pe dinți (I brush my teeth). It's perfect for hobbies you do every weekend. How do you handle stress? You might say,
De obicei, prioritizez sarcinile (Usually, I prioritize tasks). It’s also essential for traditions. If you visit your grandmother every Easter, that’s a habitual action.De obicei iau pizza, dar azi vreau paste (I usually take pizza, but today I want pasta). It sets the baseline for your normal behavior. When Not To Use It
Perfect Compus).Am mâncat means I ate (once). Mâncam means I used to eat(habitually). Also, avoid using the Present Tense for habits if you are currently in the middle of a specific, one-off action that contradicts the habit.
I usually run, but right now I am sitting.Use the right tool for the right job. Don't use a hammer when you need a screwdriver.
Common Mistakes
Am mers la bunica în fiecare vară. This sounds weird to Romanians. It should be Mergeam la bunica în fiecare vară. The am mers version sounds like a finished, single trip. Another mistake is word order with niciodată (never). You must use a double negative: Nu fac niciodată asta (I never do that). Forgetting the nu makes the sentence fall apart. Yes, even native speakers mess this up when they’re tired, but you can do better! Think of the double negative as a safety belt.Contrast With Similar Patterns
I am working vs. I work. Romanian is lazier (in a good way). The phrase Eu lucrez can mean both.de obicei or mereu, Eu lucrez might just mean you are working right now. Compared to the Imperfect, the Compound Past is for the dots on a timeline.lines or waves. Habits are continuous and repetitive, not quick and done.Quick FAQ
