[Music]

00:07

could you look yourself in the mirror

00:09

and say I love you me a few years ago I

00:14

couldn't saying those four words would

00:17

have been really difficult I did not

00:19

love myself and I didn't see what could

00:21

possibly be lovable about me well I've

00:24

come a long way since then and now not

00:26

only will I say those words I will sing

00:29

them for you as well today I'll share a

00:32

bit of my healing journey from

00:34

self-hatred to real self-love it's the

00:37

true story of how music saved my life

00:40

and set me free from several diagnoses

00:43

including depression I was born in

00:46

Nevada and when I was three years old my

00:49

parents got divorced my mother then

00:52

moved our family to Denver Colorado so

00:54

she could finish medical school when she

00:56

got into private practice I was shuffled

00:59

between school and the babysitter and my

01:02

older sister when it was the weekends I

01:05

begged my mom is to go to the hospital

01:08

with her so as she did her patient

01:11

rounds I would hang out in the gift shop

01:13

and I was always very quiet and well

01:16

behaved mainly because at home my mother

01:19

repeated often children are to be seen

01:23

not heard just as she was told when she

01:27

grew up

01:27

now the conversations on the phone with

01:30

my father were mainly about how I was

01:32

doing in school he came from the

01:34

generation that believed that with an

01:36

education you could get a good job a

01:39

pension and a secure future so when he

01:43

found out that I was performing in a

01:46

music recital or a school play I often

01:51

heard the tone of disapproval in his

01:53

voice he told me I needed to focus on my

01:56

grades successful musicians and actors

01:58

are just one in a million my dad grew up

02:01

in Tennessee it's one of the United

02:04

States known for country music and many

02:06

people travel there to look for fame but

02:09

very few people find it now my dad is

02:12

actually an

02:13

excellent guitar and banjo player and he

02:16

excels in photography so it's really not

02:19

surprising that music and creative arts

02:22

are natural passions for me but he

02:26

always discouraged me from pursuing them

02:28

as a career because he had seen too many

02:30

people try and fail at that so I worked

02:34

really hard at school so that I could

02:37

keep my dad's approval so that I could

02:40

keep performing in theater band and

02:42

choir it was through music and theatre

02:45

that I could move and release the

02:47

emotions that were bottled up inside of

02:48

me and it was on stage that I was

02:51

finally told it was good to be seen and

02:54

totally acceptable to speak up and sing

02:58

out loud so when I got to university I

03:03

performed in community theater

03:05

I discovered video production and I

03:08

became the general manager of our campus

03:10

TV station as a pre-med student and this

03:15

is when my father told me that I was a

03:17

dilettante just like him enter diagnosis

03:22

number one dilettante a person who

03:25

cultivates an area of interest such as

03:27

the arts without serious commitment or

03:30

knowledge synonyms include dabbler

03:34

tinkerer trifler amateur

03:37

non-professional non-specialists pretty

03:41

negative right isn't it amazing how
