In cities like Addis Ababa, people rarely use street names. Instead, they use 'Sefers' (neighborhoods) and landmarks. If you say 'መንገድ ጠፋኝ', people will ask which landmark you are looking for. Helping someone who has lost their way is a religious and social merit (Sawab/Bereket). It is common for a local to walk with you for several minutes to ensure you find the right path. In Ge'ez and Amharic literature, 'The Way' (Mängäd) represents one's life journey. 'Losing the way' is often used in sermons to describe sin or moral confusion. In rural areas, paths can be seasonal. A path used in the dry season might 'disappear' (mätfat) during the rains, making the phrase literally true.
