Vowel Sounds (Гласни звуци)

Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

Bulgarian has six distinct vowels that change their sound depending on whether they are stressed or unstressed.

  • There are 6 vowels: А, Е, И, О, У, and Ъ (the 'schwa' sound).
  • Stressed vowels are long and clear, like in `мама` (mama).
  • Unstressed vowels 'reduce': А sounds like Ъ, and О sounds like У.
А + Е + И + О + У + Ъ = 🗣️ Bulgarian Speech

Meanings

Vowels are the core sounds of Bulgarian syllables, produced without obstructing the airflow.

1

Stressed Vowels

Vowels that receive the word's emphasis and are pronounced clearly and fully.

“баба (grandmother)”

“пиле (chicken)”

2

Unstressed (Reduced) Vowels

Vowels that are not emphasized and undergo 'reduction' (changing their quality).

“вода (water - 'o' sounds like 'u')”

“ръка (hand - 'a' sounds like 'uh')”

The 'Ъ' Trick

If you struggle with Ъ, just make the sound you make when someone punches you in the stomach: 'uh!'
⚠️

No Diphthongs

Don't say 'boy' for 'O'. Keep it short and round like in 'hot'.
🎯

Listen for the 'U'

When Bulgarians say 'Hello' (Здравей), the 'O' is often so reduced it sounds like a tiny 'u'.

Smart Tips

Pronounce it slightly like a 'U' if it's not stressed.

Мляко (Mlyako) Мляко (Mlyaku)

Don't overthink it; it's just the neutral 'uh' sound.

B-al-gariya B-uh-lgariya

발음

/a/ not /aɪ/

Vowel Purity

Bulgarian vowels are monophthongs. Do not glide between sounds.

/ɤ/

The Ъ sound

It is a mid-back unrounded vowel, similar to the sound in 'cup' or 'love'.

Stressed Vowel Peak

ба-БА (wrong) vs БА-ба (correct)

Stress usually falls on the first or second syllable.
