For example, 'I delete' becomes मैं डिलीट करता/करती हूँ (main delete karta/karti hoon). 'You delete' is तुम डिलीट करते/करती हो (tum delete karte/karti ho). It’s that simple! You can also use it in imperative forms, like 'delete this!' which would be इसे डिलीट करो! (ise delete karo!).

Imagine you're scrolling through your phone gallery. You see a blurry picture and think, 'Ugh, I need to get rid of this.' You'd say, यह फ़ोटो डिलीट करनी है। (Yeh photo delete karni hai - I need to delete this photo). Avoid using डिलीट करना for physical removal. You wouldn't say you 'delete' a piece of trash from your room or 'delete' a stain from your shirt. For physical things, you'd use words like फेंकना (phenkna - to throw away), हटाना (hatana - to remove), or साफ़ करना (saaf karna - to clean). Using डिलीट करना for non-digital items sounds very strange, like you're trying to erase reality itself! It's strictly for the virtual world.

One big mistake is using मिटाना (mitana - to erase/wipe out) when you mean to delete a digital file. While मिटाना works for physical erasing (like chalk from a board), it sounds a bit old-fashioned or overly dramatic for digital deletion. Another error is trying to use a pure Hindi verb for digital deletion, which just doesn't exist widely. The English loanword is dominant here.

There are other ways to express removal, but डिलीट करना is king for digital contexts. हटाना (hatana) is a more general term for 'to remove' and can be used for both physical and digital things. For example, you might हटाना a chair from a room or हटाना a post from a blog. However, for specific digital actions like deleting a file, डिलीट करना is much more common and natural. रद्द करना (radd karna) means 'to cancel,' which is different from deleting.

Sometimes, people might shorten it informally, especially in very casual chat. You might hear people say डिलीट कर दो (delete kar do - just delete it!) as a quick command. The verb करना (karna) can also be replaced by other verbs in specific contexts, though less common. For instance, डिलीट मारना (delete maarna - literally 'to strike delete') is a very informal, slangy way to say it, often used among younger people or in gaming contexts. It adds a bit of aggressive flair.
