Agree

Expressing agreement with a statement.

🌍

문화적 배경

In Lao meetings, silence is often interpreted as agreement (hen dee). If you disagree, you must speak up very gently, often starting with a compliment. Isan speakers use 'hen dee' similarly to Lao speakers, though they are increasingly influenced by the Thai 'hen duay.' Second-generation Lao speakers might use 'hen dee' as a literal translation of 'I see well,' losing the figurative 'I agree' sense. It's a common heritage language shift. In Lao business, 'hen dee' is the first step. The 'tok long' (deal) usually requires a follow-up meal or social gathering to solidify the agreement.

💡

The 'Nam' Rule

Always add 'nam' if you are agreeing with a person. It makes you sound much more natural.

⚠️

Don't be too blunt

In Lao, 'Bor hen dee' (I don't agree) can be very strong. Try 'Khoy yang bor than hen dee' (I don't agree yet) to be softer.

🎯

Double up for emphasis

Say 'Hen dee, hen dee!' twice to show you are really excited about an idea.

💬

Nodding

Lao people often nod while saying 'Hen dee.' A small bow (nop) is not necessary unless talking to a monk or royalty.
