뜻
Engaging in the activity of reading.
문화적 배경
Reading is considered a 'noble' hobby. People who read a lot are often called 'Sa-phat-thaw-lu' (a person who reads), which is a high compliment. Historically, all boys in Myanmar attended monastery schools where reading 'Sa' (scriptures) was the core of their education. This has led to a very high literacy rate. In Myanmar tea shops, it is very common to see people reading newspapers or journals and discussing the news. It's a social form of 'Sa-phat-tal'. The month of Nattaw (December) is dedicated to writers. Literary talks (Sa-pay-haw-pyaw-pwal) are held across the country, encouraging everyone to read more.
Drop the 'Oke'
In casual speech, just say 'Sa-phat-tal' (I'm reading). It's faster and more natural.
The 'P' Sound
Make sure to blow air out when saying 'Phat'. If you don't, it might sound like 'Pat' (to wrap), which is a different word.
