러시아어 접속사: 그리고 & 하지만 (и, а, но)

Use 'и' to add, 'а' to contrast, and 'но' to contradict with a mandatory comma before 'а' and 'но'.

Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

Master the difference between 'и' (and), 'а' (contrast/and), and 'но' (but) to sound like a native speaker.

  • Use 'и' to connect similar items or actions: 'Я ем и пью' (I eat and drink).
  • Use 'а' for soft contrast or comparing two different subjects: 'Я иду, а ты стоишь' (I go, but you stand).
  • Use 'но' for strong opposition or unexpected results: 'Я хотел пойти, но устал' (I wanted to go, but I'm tired).
Item 1 + (и/а/но) + Item 2

The 'Not X, but Y' Rule

Whenever you have a sentence starting with 'Not...', the 'but' that follows is almost always 'а'. Example: 'Это не чай, а кофе.'
⚠️

The Comma is Non-Negotiable

In English, we are lazy with commas. In Russian, if you skip the comma before 'а' or 'но', it's a major spelling error.
💬

Conversational 'А'

Russians love starting questions with 'А'. It makes the question feel connected to the previous topic. 'А где ты работаешь?' sounds more natural than just 'Где ты работаешь?'

Always use 'а'.

Я люблю кофе и он любит чай. Я люблю кофе, а он любит чай.

Check if it's a contradiction or a comparison.

Use 'однако' instead of 'но'.
