These conjunctions link words, phrases, or clauses. They define the relationship between two ideas as additive, contrastive, or oppositional.

The 'Not X, but Y' Rule

Whenever you have a sentence starting with 'Not...', the 'but' that follows is almost always 'а'. Example: 'Это не чай, а кофе.'

In English, we are lazy with commas. In Russian, if you skip the comma before 'а' or 'но', it's a major spelling error.

Russians love starting questions with 'А'. It makes the question feel connected to the previous topic. 'А где ты работаешь?' sounds more natural than just 'Где ты работаешь?'

Always use 'а'.

Check if it's a contradiction or a comparison.
