00:00

Thank you very

00:03

much. Thank

00:06

you. Well, thank you, President

00:09

Powers, Provost Fenves, deans, members

00:13

of the faculty, family, and friends, and

00:14

most importantly, the class of 2014. It

00:19

is it is indeed an honor for me to be

00:23

here tonight. It's been almost 37 years

00:26

to the day that I graduated from UT. I

00:29

remember a lot of things about that day.

00:32

I remember I had a throbbing headache

00:35

from a party the night

00:40

before. I remember I had a serious

00:43

girlfriend who I later

00:45

married. That's important to remember,

00:47

by the way. And I remember I was getting

00:49

commissioned in the Navy that day. But

00:51

of all the things I remember, I don't

00:54

have a clue who the commencement speaker

00:56

was. and I certainly don't remember

00:58

anything they said. So, acknowledging

01:00

that fact, if I can't make this

01:02

commencement speech memorable, I will at

01:04

least try to make it

01:06

short. So, the university slogan is what

01:10

starts here changes the world. Well,

01:11

I've got to admit, I kind of like it.

01:13

What starts here changes the world.

01:16

Tonight, there are almost

01:18

8,000 students or there are more than

01:20

8,000 students graduated from UT. So

01:23

that great paragon of analytical rigor,

01:26

ask.com says that the average American

01:29

will meet 10,000 people in their

01:32

lifetime. 10,000 people. That's a lot of

01:34

folks. But if every one of you changed

01:37

the lives of just 10 people and each one

01:41

of those people changed the lives of

01:43

another 10 people and another 10, then

01:47

in five generations, 125 years, the

01:49

class of

01:50

2014 will have changed the lives of

01:53

800 million people. 800 million

01:58

people. Think about it. Over twice the

02:02

population of the United States. Go one

02:03

more generation and you can change the

02:06

entire population of the world. 8

02:08

billion people. If you think it's hard

02:10

to change the lives of 10 people, change

02:13

their lives forever, you're wrong. I saw

02:16

it happen every day in Iraq and

02:17

Afghanistan. A young army officer makes

02:20

a decision to go left instead of right

02:22

down a road in

02:23

Baghdad, and the 10 soldiers with him

02:26

are saved from a close-in ambush. In

02:29

Kandahar Province, Afghanistan, a

02:31

non-commission officer from the female

02:33

engagement team senses that something

02:35

isn't right and directs the infantry

02:38

platoon away from a 500 lb IED, saving

02:42

the lives of a dozen

02:43

soldiers. But if you think about it, not

02:46

only were those soldiers saved by the

02:48

decisions of one person, but their

02:50

children were saved and their children's

02:53

children. Generations were saved by one

02:56

decision, one person.

02:59

But changing the world can happen

03:00

anywhere and anyone can do it. So what

03:03

starts here can indeed change the world.

03:05

But the question

03:06

is what will the world look like after

03:09

you change it? Well, I'm confident that

03:11

it will look much, much better. But if

03:13

you'll humor this old sailor for just a

03:15

moment, I have a few suggestions that

03:17

might help you on your way to a better

03:19

world. And while these lessons were

03:21

learned during my time in the military,

03:23

I can assure you that it matters not

03:26

whether you ever served a day in

03:27

uniform. It matters not your gender,

03:30

your ethnic or religious background,

03:31

your orientation, or your social status.

03:34

Our struggles in this world are similar,

03:36

and the lessons to overcome those

03:38

struggles and to move forward changing

03:40

ourselves and changing the world around

03:42

us will apply equally to all.

03:45

I've been a Navy Seal for 36 years, but

03:48

it all began when I left UT for basic

03:51

SEAL training in Coronado, California.

03:53

Basic SEAL training is six months of

03:56

long torturous runs in the soft sand,

03:58

midnight swims in the cold water off San

04:00

Diego, obstacle courses, unending
