في حدود علمنا

You do not need to change it much, though you can swap علمنا (our knowledge) for علمي (my knowledge) if you are speaking only for yourself. It is the linguistic equivalent of "don't quote me on this, but..."

This phrase lives in the "Neutral to Formal" neighborhood. You will hear it in news broadcasts, read it in business emails, and use it in job interviews. However, it is not so stiff that you cannot use it with friends. It just makes you sound like a very well-informed friend. Think of it as the difference between wearing a hoodie and wearing a blazer. Both are fine for a coffee date, but the blazer shows you mean business. On social media, it is used to avoid "fake news" accusations.

Picture a WhatsApp group chat for a class project. Someone asks if the deadline changed. You reply: في حدود علمنا، الموعد ما زال غداً (To our knowledge, the deadline is still tomorrow). You are being helpful, but if the professor changed it five minutes ago, nobody can blame you. Or imagine a travel vlogger on YouTube. They might say, "This is the oldest cafe in Cairo, في حدود علمنا." It adds a layer of research-backed authority to their content. It is a favorite for LinkedIn posts where people share industry insights.

Use it when the stakes are medium to high. It is perfect for professional updates, academic discussions, or giving directions to a tourist. It is also great when you are relaying information from a third party. If your boss told you the meeting is at 10 AM, use this phrase. It shifts the responsibility from you to the "knowledge" itself. If you are a gamer, use it when discussing leaks or rumors about a new release. It keeps your reputation as a "reliable source" intact.

Do not use this for personal feelings or obvious facts. If someone asks if you like pizza, saying في حدود علمي، أحب البيتزا sounds like you have amnesia. It is weird! Also, avoid it for things that are 100% certain, like في حدود علمنا، الشمس تشرق من الشرق. People will think you are joking or being incredibly sarcastic. It is also too heavy for very casual flirting or joking around. You do not want to sound like a lawyer during a first date unless you are actually a lawyer on a date with another lawyer.

Is it the same as "I think"? No, it's stronger. "I think" is a guess; this is based on evidence. Can I use it in a text? Yes, it's very common in work-related WhatsApps. Does it sound old-fashioned? Not at all; it sounds educated and precise. Is there a shorter version? على حد علمي is slightly punchier. Can I use it in a debate? Yes, it's a great way to present a fact while appearing open-minded. Should I use it if I'm 100% sure? Only if you want to be humble.
