Aspect in Imperative Mood

Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

In Bulgarian commands, use Imperfective for habits and 'don't' sentences, and Perfective for specific, one-time results you want achieved now.

  • Use Imperfective for ongoing or repeated actions: 'Пиши всеки ден!' (Write every day!)
  • Use Perfective for completed, one-time results: 'Напиши домашното!' (Finish the homework!)
  • Always use Imperfective for negative commands (prohibitions): 'Не пиши!' (Don't write!)

💬

Softening with 'де'

Add the particle 'де' to an imperative to sound more encouraging or slightly impatient, depending on tone. 'Кажи де!' (Go on, tell me!).
⚠️

Avoid Bluntness

Using a perfective imperative without 'моля' (please) can sound like a military order. Always add 'моля' in shops or with strangers.
💡

The Invitation Rule

When hosting, use the imperfective. 'Влизайте' sounds like 'You are welcome to enter', while 'Влезте' sounds like 'Get in here'.

Smart Tips

Always use the plural imperfective 'Влизайте!', even if it's just one friend. It sounds much warmer.
