At the A1 level, 'Corporate Social Responsibility' is too complex. Instead, think of it as 'Good companies helping people.' In Persian, you might simply say 'Sherkat-e khub' (A good company) or 'Komak be mardom' (Helping people). At this stage, you don't need to use the full phrase 'Mas'uliyat-e Ejtema'i-ye Sherkati,' but you can understand that some companies want to be nice to the world. Imagine a company giving free books to children; that is a simple form of this big word. You just need to know 'Sherkat' (Company) and 'Komak' (Help).
At A2, you can start to combine words. You know 'Mas'ul' (Responsible) and 'Mardom' (People). 'Mas'uliyat-e Ejtema'i' means being responsible for the people around you. A company (Sherkat) has this responsibility. You might see this in simple news stories about a company planting trees. You can say: 'In sherkat be mohit-e zist komak mikonad' (This company helps the environment). This is the beginning of understanding the concept without the heavy academic terminology.
At B1, you are ready for the full term. You understand that 'Ejtema'i' comes from 'Ejtema' (Society). You can use the phrase in a sentence to describe why a company is doing something good. For example, 'Sherkat-ha bayad mas'uliyat-e ejtema'i dashte bashand' (Companies should have social responsibility). You can distinguish between just making money and doing something for the community. You are starting to read business news where this term appears frequently.
At B2, you should use 'Mas'uliyat-e Ejtema'i-ye Sherkati' fluently in professional contexts. You understand it as a strategic business concept. You can discuss the 'Triple Bottom Line' (Profit, People, Planet) using Persian terms. You can explain how CSR affects a brand's reputation (Etebar-e Brand). You should be able to write a short paragraph about why CSR is important for modern Iranian businesses, using related terms like 'Tose'e-ye Paydar' (Sustainable Development) and 'Akhlaq-e Herfe'i' (Professional Ethics).
At C1, you can critically analyze CSR reports. You understand the nuances between 'Greenwashing' (Sabz-shuyi) and genuine 'Mas'uliyat-e Ejtema'i-ye Sherkati.' You can debate the legal requirements versus voluntary actions of corporations in Iran. You use the term in complex grammatical structures, such as: 'Pazirash-e mas'uliyat-e ejtema'i-ye sherkati na tanha yek vazife-ye akhlaqi, balke yek zarurat-e estratezhik ast' (Adopting CSR is not only a moral duty but a strategic necessity).
At C2, you have a native-like grasp of the socio-economic implications of 'Mas'uliyat-e Ejtema'i-ye Sherkati.' You can discuss its historical evolution in Iran from 'Bazaar' philanthropy to modern corporate governance. You can lead board-level discussions or write academic papers on the impact of international sanctions on the CSR activities of Iranian firms. You understand the subtle cultural connotations and how the term interacts with Iranian values of 'Javanmardi' (Chivalry/Generosity).

مسئولیت اجتماعی شرکتی in 30 Seconds

  • A company's duty to help society and the environment.
  • Goes beyond profit to include ethical and social impact.
  • Commonly used in formal Persian business reports and news.
  • Essential for B2+ level professional communication in Iran.

The term مسئولیت اجتماعی شرکتی (Mas’uliyat-e Ejtema’i-ye Sherkati) represents a sophisticated evolution in the Persian business lexicon. Historically, the Iranian marketplace was governed by the concept of 'Bazaar ethics,' where individual merchants (Bazaaris) engaged in 'Kheyriyeh' (charity) based on religious obligations like Khums or Zakat. However, as the Iranian economy modernized and integrated with global standards, the formal concept of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) emerged. This term does not merely refer to giving money to the poor; it encompasses a holistic business model where companies are legally and ethically accountable to the society and environment they operate within.

Literal Translation
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). Breakdown: Mas’uliyat (Responsibility) + Ejtema’i (Social) + Sherkati (Corporate/Company-related).

In contemporary Iran, you will find this term in the annual reports of major tech companies like Snapp, Digikala, and various industrial giants in the oil and gas sector. It is used to describe initiatives ranging from environmental protection in the Zagros mountains to digital literacy programs in remote Sistan and Baluchestan. Unlike simple 'Ehsan' (kindness), this term implies a structural, strategic commitment integrated into the company's core DNA. It is a B2-level term because it requires an understanding of abstract organizational concepts and the ability to distinguish between personal philanthropy and institutional duty.

بسیاری از برندهای بزرگ ایرانی اکنون بخشی به نام مسئولیت اجتماعی شرکتی دارند که بر توسعه پایدار تمرکز می‌کند.

Business Context
Used during board meetings to discuss long-term sustainability and brand image.

سرمایه‌گذاران به گزارش‌های مسئولیت اجتماعی شرکتی اهمیت زیادی می‌دهند.

Environmental Context
Used when discussing a company's carbon footprint or waste management strategies.

کاهش مصرف پلاستیک بخشی از مسئولیت اجتماعی شرکتی ماست.

Furthermore, the term is frequently debated in Iranian academic circles. Scholars argue whether 'CSR' is a Western import or if it has deep roots in the Iranian 'Pahlavani' tradition of helping the community. When you use this phrase, you are signaling a high level of professional Persian proficiency, moving beyond everyday 'Bazaar' talk into the realm of international commerce and ethical philosophy. It is an essential term for anyone looking to work in the Iranian private sector or study modern Persian sociology.

Using مسئولیت اجتماعی شرکتی correctly requires understanding its grammatical placement as a complex noun phrase. It usually functions as the subject or the object of a sentence, often paired with verbs like 'انجام دادن' (to perform), 'اجرا کردن' (to implement), or 'پذیرفتن' (to accept/adopt). Because it is a formal term, the surrounding vocabulary should ideally match its formal register.

As a Subject
When the concept itself is doing something or is the focus of the description.

مسئولیت اجتماعی شرکتی می‌تواند باعث بهبود تصویر برند شود. (CSR can lead to the improvement of brand image.)

In the sentence above, the term is the driving force. Notice how it is paired with 'تصویر برند' (brand image), another professional term. This creates a cohesive formal tone. If you were to use a more casual term like 'خوبی' (goodness) instead of CSR, the sentence would lose its professional weight.

As an Object
When a company or person is acting upon the concept.

شرکت ما مسئولیت اجتماعی شرکتی را در اولویت قرار داده است. (Our company has prioritized CSR.)

When discussing the components of CSR, you might use 'در قالب' (in the form of). For example: 'فعالیت‌های ما در قالب مسئولیت اجتماعی شرکتی انجام می‌شود' (Our activities are performed in the framework of CSR). This is a very common way to justify company spending on non-profit activities to shareholders or the public.

Negative Usage
Critiquing companies for lack of social awareness.

برخی شرکت‌ها به مسئولیت اجتماعی شرکتی فقط به عنوان یک ابزار تبلیغاتی نگاه می‌کنند. (Some companies view CSR only as a promotional tool.)

You are most likely to encounter مسئولیت اجتماعی شرکتی in professional, academic, and media environments. It is not a word you would typically hear at a grocery store or in a casual conversation with friends, unless those friends are business professionals or activists.

Business News & Media
News agencies like IRNA, ISNA, or Bloomberg Persian frequently report on 'CSR awards' or new environmental regulations affecting companies.

اخبار ساعت نه گزارشی درباره مسئولیت اجتماعی شرکتی در صنعت نفت پخش کرد.

In the Iranian startup ecosystem (often called the 'Eco-system'), CSR is a buzzword. At tech conferences like Elecomp or Inotex, founders often discuss their CSR strategies to attract Gen Z employees who value social impact. You will hear phrases like 'CSR goals' or 'Social ROI' translated or adapted into Persian sentences.

Job Interviews
If you are interviewing for a management position in a reputable Iranian firm, asking about their CSR policies shows high-level engagement.

آیا شرکت شما برنامه‌ای برای مسئولیت اجتماعی شرکتی دارد؟

Because مسئولیت اجتماعی شرکتی is a complex phrase, learners and even native speakers often make specific errors in its application and grammar.

Mistake 1: Confusing CSR with Charity (Kheyriyeh)
While charity is a part of CSR, they are not synonyms. Charity is 'Kheyriyeh' (خیریه). CSR is a broader business strategy. Don't say 'We did CSR' when you just mean 'We donated money.'

In a professional context, using 'Kheyriyeh' instead of 'Mas'uliyat-e Ejtema'i' might make the company sound less strategic and more like a traditional religious foundation. CSR implies sustainability and systemic change.

Mistake 2: Missing the Ezafe
The phrase is a chain of three nouns/adjectives. You must link them with the 'e' sound: Mas'uliyat-e (e) Ejtema'i-ye (ye) Sherkati. Skipping these sounds makes the phrase incomprehensible.

Incorrect: Mas'uliyat Ejtema'i Sherkat. Correct: Mas'uliyat-e Ejtema'i-ye Sherkati.

Mistake 3: Overusing it for Small Businesses
While small businesses can have social responsibility, the word 'Sherkati' (Corporate) implies a larger entity. For a local shop, 'Mas'uliyat-e Ejtema'i' (without 'Sherkati') is more appropriate.

Depending on the context, you might want to use more specific or slightly different terms than مسئولیت اجتماعی شرکتی.

اخلاق کسب و کار (Akhlaq-e Kasb-o Kar)
Business Ethics. This refers more to the internal moral code of the company (not lying to customers, fair wages) rather than external social impact.
توسعه پایدار (Tose'e-ye Paydar)
Sustainable Development. This is the goal of many CSR programs. CSR is the *method*, Sustainable Development is the *result*.
امور خیریه (Omur-e Kheyriyeh)
Charitable Affairs. Use this if you are strictly talking about donating money or goods without a broader strategic business framework.

Word Origin

The term is a modern Persian construction combining Arabic roots. 'Mas'uliyat' comes from the Arabic root 'S-'-L' (to ask), implying being 'asked' or 'questioned' for one's actions. 'Ejtema'i' comes from 'J-M-'' (to gather), and 'Sherkati' from 'Sh-R-K' (to share/partnership).

Original meaning: Being answerable to the gathered partners (society).

Indo-European (Persian) with heavy Arabic loanwords.

Cultural Context

Be careful not to dismiss traditional 'Kheyriyeh' (charity) while promoting CSR; many Iranians value the religious/traditional roots of giving.

In the West, CSR is often driven by ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) scores. In Iran, it is often more about direct community support.
