Mixed Conditionals: Combining Types
Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
Mixed conditionals connect a past action to a present result, or a permanent state to a past event.
- Use Past Perfect in the 'if' clause for past causes: Եթե սովորած լինեի (If I had studied).
- Use Conditional Present in the result clause for present effects: հիմա կիմանայի (I would know now).
- Use Imperfect in the 'if' clause for general states: Եթե հարուստ լինեի (If I were rich).
Meanings
Mixed conditionals are used when the time in the 'if' clause is different from the time in the result clause.
Past Cause / Present Result
A hypothetical past action that would change the current situation.
“Եթե ես այդ գիրքը կարդացած լինեի, հիմա պատասխանը կիմանայի:”

Present State / Past Result
A permanent or present quality that would have changed a past event.

Learners use Type 2 (Present-Present) when they mean Mixed (Past-Present).
