If you tell a Georgian host 'მცივა', they will likely not just turn up the heat but also bring you wool socks (tchitebi) and a glass of chacha to 'warm your blood'. There is a widespread cultural fear of drafts in Georgia. Saying 'მცივა' is often the first step in a long discussion about which window is causing the draft. In Svaneti and Tusheti, the cold is respected as a powerful neighbor. Traditional houses (Koshki) were built to trap heat, and the language reflects this survivalist view of temperature. In modern Tbilisi, 'მცივა' is the most common complaint in the 'Marshrutka' (minibus) during winter, often leading to strangers bonding over the lack of heating.
