Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

To talk about the past in Kannada, add specific suffixes to the verb root based on the person and gender.

  • Identify the verb root: 'maadu' (to do) becomes 'maadid-' in the past.
  • Add the personal suffix: 'naanu maadidenu' (I did).
  • Negatives use the 'illa' particle or specific negative verb forms.

Meanings

The Simple Past tense is used to describe completed actions in the past. It is the most common way to narrate events that happened yesterday, last week, or at any point before now.
