Pronoun Shifts
Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
When reporting what someone said, you must shift pronouns to match the new speaker's perspective.
- 1st person (eu) becomes 3rd person (el/ea) if the reporter is not the speaker: 'Eu plec' -> 'El a spus că el pleacă'.
- 2nd person (tu) becomes 1st person (eu) if addressed to the reporter: 'Tu ești bun' -> 'Mi-a spus că eu sunt bun'.
- Possessives must shift accordingly: 'Cartea mea' becomes 'Cartea lui' when reported by a third party.

Pronoun shifts are necessary when converting direct speech into indirect (reported) speech to maintain logical reference to the speaker and listener.
